Source?

QUOTEPlus i'm sure this is just a rejig of PSPStates and still only works on the 2000's and not 1000's.
That seems a far more likely explanation. I have a 2000 and 3000 and I think you're the first person I've talked to that owns+actively plays a 1000.

So did Linux work for resurrecting the card? I'm guessing it was the file table error and Windows was just being a pain in the arse--as it's often wont to do in cases of FAT errors.

Source is CNGBA. I didn't book mark it because translation is always a cup half empty thing....but since it's based upon PSPStates i seem to remember Dark Alex said something similar about possible bricks on Maxconsole back around 2008. It's not just dumping the game info but the state of the PSP too, hence the brick risk.

And when i got the stick back it seemed ok. I didn't ask what he found or did as i'm the kind of person who'd assume it was forever impaired if he gave me some negative sounding news.

This is the first I've heard of it being built off PSPstates, but using that on a 1000 is a no-no in any situation. But I remain skeptical about how risky this is in any other situation, I've used it heavily on both my PSPs with no ill effect. It writes to the same range of memory values as the cheat searcher so at the absolute worst it seems no more dangerous than downloading cheats off the internet and using them, or messing with the values yourself in creating codes which I do all the time.

PS I'd be interested to know what he had to do to restore the card just for my own edification in case anybody else encounters a similar issue.

You sure it writes to the firmware? I see no reason to and have not heard of it.Loading states rewrites a snapshot of how the PSP memory was configured when the savestate was made (it's on a massive scale relative to the way emulator savestates work). Therefore on restoration if you have changed anything to any degree it can brick the console....this has apparently been confirmed. That's not what I asked, and that's not what you originally said.

The whole "memory mismatch can cause issues" applies for any save state thing for the PSP, and is already noted.

I don't have a 1000 to test.
