I personally cant recommend nexus devices because of the lack of the sd card slot (also not interested in paying $50+ for 16GB more when I can buy a 64GB microsd for $30-40)

The 2nd gen Nexus 7 is what I would also recommend. My dad has a 1st gen and my brother has a 2nd gen. Just looking at the two, the second gen looks to be higher quality. Turn the two devices on and compare the screens and you'll see a huge difference. Performance-wise the difference may be negligible, but the build quality and the screen of the second gen makes it so much better.
