Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman is probably my favorite book of all time. Richard Feynman was a nobel prize winning physicist (he worked on the Manhattan project, and he was the person that figured out why the space shuttle Challenger exploded), but this is not a science book. It is a book of stories and anecdotes about his life, and he lead a very interesting life indeed. Life, work, love, sex, art and music are all topics of this book.

I like novels, but very few fictional characters are as interesting as Mr. Feynman was.

Damnit, I sound like an infomercial. Read the book anyway. It's good.

They're about anthropomorphic animals with weapons and such, what's better than that?
The fact that they're about FURRY?
Go read jPod. I found it to be awesome.
The Gum Thief is also epic.
In fact, read any work of fiction written by Douglas Coupland.
Christopher Moore is also a very good writer.

Other than that, there is one book to rule them all...
Digital Fortress - Dan Brown

I really enjoyed the Dragonriders of Pern series. There's an old obscure book called The Flying Sorcers that I really loved as well. It's a really smart book but still has a really enjoyable sci-fi/fantasy feel to it.

Here's a link to the book if anyones interested

OK here are my reccomendation :

Dragon riders of Pern series by Anne McCaffrey .
Most of Haruki Murakami's work ( A wild sheep case is my fav).
Song of Ice and Fire series.

I can reccomend more if your intersted.

I also love pratchett, he's great!
And I have to second the one who said: The raw shark texts (though it's not funny at all)...
(and come on people, terry pratchett isn't sci-fi...)

BUT a good series of 4 (or 8) books (depending on where you live) is: Otherland by tad williams, it is a sci-fi and fantasy all in one series, by a fantasy author... it's damn great!

The book that made me read the raw shark texts, which actually is my favourite as well, is: HOUSE OF LEAVES by mark z danielewski... it's the number 1 best book i ever read!
,... yeah.... can't really say much about it...

I'd recommend getting a collection of short stories. Short stories really make you think.

To add to all the George R. R. Martin recommendations, see if you can get a copy of Dreamsongs Vol 1. It has some excellent non-"Ice and Fire" short stories in it like "A Song for Lya" and (my #1 favorite short story) "Sandkings".

Sandkings gets two huge thumbs up. You've gotta read it. It's only 50 pages, too.

Breakfast of Champions - Kurt Vonnegut

That is a good book, but it's kind of mindblowing, and you can't really read it lightly if you want to comprehend it.'

If you like fantasy, the Dark Tower series by Stephen King is an excellent read. It's by far my favorite fantasy series.
