Gaming RE: Mercenaries Doesn't Support Save resetting

Well, just remove your cart or poweroff your Nintendo 3DS while the game is saving, and your data should be corrupted. And it will ask you to reset data.

Well we can delete our saves now :3
Nice to know that it works, but it's not worth getting the adapter just for that purpose. If you have one already it's a great method to get some more money if you want to sell the game.

@Disizdream: It's been rumoured that the game uses a backup save in that case, which renders this method useless.

capcom just lost another sale, and i was going to buy it yesterday glad they didn't have it in stock yet

I imagine that game shops that do a lot of trade in used game will buy one per store, especially if more games start doing this.

I didn't think about that, but that's a great option for them, at least if it's legal. If the NDS Adapter Plus can't dump any games, it should be, otherwise it could be difficult.

straight from the capcom forums

Hi everyone. I know there are a lot of questions about the save data for Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D, and we'll try to answer as best as we can.

First, here's the official statement:

'In Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D, all mission progress is saved directly to the Nintendo 3DS cartridge, where it cannot be reset. The nature of the game invites high levels of replayability, encouraging fans to improve mission scores. The save mechanic ensures that both original and unlocked game content will be available to all users. Secondhand game sales were not a factor in this development decision, and we hope that all our consumers will be able to enjoy the entirety of the survival-action experiences that the game does offer. '

Second, here's the gist:

There was no intention of lessening the experience of the game. Essentially, RE Mercs was treated like an arcade fighting game. You unlock characters, levels, etc and they just stay unlocked as they would in an arcade machine. There was no hidden motive to prevent buying used copies. It's not some secret form of DRM. It's simply the way we designed the save system to work with the arcade type of gameplay.

Third, here's a short Q/A:

Q. What type of game is Resident Evil The Mercenaries 3D?
A. Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D is a time-based score attack game very similar in style to an old school arcade game. Across the various levels, players must defeat hordes of enemies, unlock new weapons, and collect hidden bonuses to rack up high scores. After time has run out, a rank and score are displayed. The game does not feature a traditional campaign or story mode.

Q. Is it true that the game can only be played through once?
A. No. This is not true. Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D is a non-linear experience where there is no set end to the game. It is a score attack game and progression is defined as improving upon previous high scores. Players can replay each mission as many times as they like to continually challenge themselves to improve.

Q. Does the inability to reset the save game data mean that those purchasing a secondhand version of the game will have content missing?
A. Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D consists of 30 time-based missions, through which the player unlocks skill upgrades as they progress through the game. Anyone purchasing a copy of the game secondhand would have access to all the missions and skills that the original owner unlocked, in addition to the content that was available to the original user.

If there are other concerns, I'll do what I can to answer.

Do you think that it'd be possible for them to release a patch to enable save wipes?

It seems like the (internet) uproar about this resolved the 'problem' for future games:

@xist: I doubt that Nintendo supports game patches/updates. Maybe a separate app, downloaded via the eShop, would be possible, but I doubt it'll happen.

I wouldn't rule it out completely. There was that Ridge Racer problem that was fixed with an Update. It might've been a problem caused by an update (although some people had that problem before the update), but it's still a fix. I don't think they'd release a patch to enable saving erasing for this game, but I wouldn't rule out patch releasing in the form of DLC from the developers in the future.

Possible? Yes. Likely? No.

I don't understand why you won't buy a game you like if you can't wipe the save. Just get the game and enjoy it yourself, don't think about selling it.

Last edited by Lucifer666,
to be honest, i didn't care for the mercenaries game... i bought it for the Revelations demo MOSTLY (95%).... but the demo sucked too. so yeah.

edit:
the point is, if you care for the value of your money, a "mini-game" type game SHOULD be the more re-sell-able game.
I would understand a replayable or LONG-ass game to have this "non-wipe" feature, but this excuse of a mini-game sold for $40?
but i earn and burn my own money so i didn't care.

Why ? Apart from the fact it is very short, did it have bad controls, bad graphics or anything else wrong with it ?

The only things that sucked about the demo are that it's too short and that the 3D isn't that impressive, imo. It would've been nice if they included the E3 demo.

Bought it yesterday, traded it in today. The demo was the best part, and even that wasn't entirely that great (20x better than Mercenaries though).
