Racism and University

My university is highly racist. Or at least, the student population in it is. It cannot be helped - I'm in a small white town, whose main industries were automotive, and the John Deere plant. Since these two industries have left the area, well, it's pretty much left to the university to sustain the town. It doesn't help that I'm a triple minority, female, Asian, and a homosexual. There is a highly quiet Asian club up here, and the ever present anime club has more Caucasian members in it than Asian members. My point is, that most Asian people on campus aren't that active.

In my department (Recreation and leisure), 99.9% of the professors are visibly white. They speak without a noticeable accent, and they are quite visibly white. Not a problem, but when the professors start on "if you don't understand the vocabulary, please ask" when looking directly at me, there is a fucking problem. (I read Shakespeare for fun, and I love writing.) Oh, and the "difficult" vocabulary? My autistic friend can read your powerpoint slides and fully understand them.

Ever try speaking to a bunch of stupid white girls? You know the ones - "oh my god, I'm so wasted" and "did you take those notes?". Seriously annoying. These are the subset of people who tend to ignore you if you aren't of their background. Also annoying are the white guys - all they can talk about is beer and banging chicks.

I'm not saying I'm not racist. I am, but I tend to keep my trap shut and I tend not to let it color my judgment. But sometimes, you just feel like telling a certain subset of people to shut the hell up. For example, my two Asian housemates always have dinner together. Not a big deal, as everyone eats and shits the same stuff, right? Nope, they are loud, obnoxious, and the sound tends to leach right through the door, undiluted in volume. Also, the white straight girls in my classes tend to hang out with the same people (it's like the meeting of the clones - seriously).

Also, the Indian girl ("Indian as in Mumbai, not come to our casino") tends to play with the tempurature controls. I can literally wear a tee shirt inside the house, and to walk outside, I need a down jacket, a face mask, gloves, and a hat. Please do not make it seem like the fucking Sahara, dear roommates.

In DS news - I've been playing Kingdom Hearts 368/2 days. It's just rather weird to me. Sora and Roxas? Ummm...yeah. But I do want to cosplay as one of Organization 13 - those coats look awesome!

Funny anecdote of the day: I live in one of the university's "dry" areas. That means you aren't allowed to possess any type of booze - not even cooking wine. This means that yes, you can go drinking, and come home soused - but not in that physical area. It's fine with me, as I get to ignore all the stupid drunks out there. So, I was working on studying when the doorbell to my residence rings - I go answer it. A group of people were collecting cans/bottles from alcohol (probably for the deposit money). It made me laugh because I said it was a "dry" court, and the guy behind the girl I was talking to screams to his friend "I told you they exist!"...like we were some sort of rare specimen or something.

Really? When a whole subset of people get paid less, so they can do less (interact less) with the world, doesn't that make them "not equal" or a minority. Well our society may be oriented towards the male, but our (American) legal system is very biased towards women.

I normally would think universities and the like are actually "majority" racist. Most universities and other places want to balance out their population for good appearances. If you've got a college full of 20 white males and 2 black males, that's not looking good (well, the fact you have 22 students at a university wouldn't help either). If you've got a bunch of students who are white and black, male and female, straight and gay, well then you've got Diversity University there. Well, that's for the accepting process, not the actual student to student interactions.

@ Guild McCommunist: I think it's because the admin is so white that we have problems. People tend to stick together, right? But you are right - it looks like "diversity" on paper, but then, people tend not to speak to people from across racial barriers.

My dad said if I came home with a guy who wasn't white he wouldn't let me date him...what if I come home with a black chick or an Asian chick...he said only guys...(I'm bi, BTW), but seriously, he's gonna control who I date because I live with him...he is such an ass. Anyway there are always going to be people in this world that are complete douchebags...just ignore them like I do.

Don't worry - my parents are the same way. I'm engaged to a black girl (and to top it off, she's from the South as well), and I'm just worrying about the day I have to introduce her to my parents. My dad will probably shut down and start crying like I'm marrying scum, and my mother will start hollering her head off. So, my relatives know that I'm engaged to a woman and she's not asian, and they'd give me support. (I was completely an ass at my cousin's engagement party - I couldn't do anything but fake smile --> "she gets the party and support from the entire family", and I get to hide in the closet because of it? Not fucking fair.

Offended? No. It would take a lot more than anonymous blog postings to offend me. Just trying to point out the hypocrisy and negativity in your blog posts and apparently your life. Your life sounds miserable but I think you like it that way, and make it that way. I will stop reading your posts though - not because they offend me but they are just so sad in many ways.
