Hacking r4i sdhc red box problem

my brother has a r4i sdhc that comes from a red box, with a 1.4 on it.
i tried every download, have a mac and a microsd sandisk 4gb.
can somebody tell me how to get out of this nightmare?

You go to the web address, which is written on both the both and the cart itself, and download the newest firmware.
