im curious what games arent supported as well since ive had very good luck with my r4's compatibility. I have a spring-loader version from near release as well and while mine didnt "break", it does take almost as much TLC to get the micro to stay in there as an old NES did to get it to load up games after a while (remember how every person you knew had a unique method for getting games to work on THEIR system?

)

I dont have an issue with recent slow updates because I agree with a poster above that there isnt all that much to fix. Looking at possibly getting an AK2 for sdhc support but will be giving the r4 to my sister since there's really nothing wrong with it.

My R4 never fails me (except the times when the contact "challenges" me), every ROM that I tested works perfectly. The team didn't fix Worms Open Warfare 2 too, so maybe ARM7 route for Hulk is still tolerable.

Yeah, R4 didn't have GREAT features like real-time-save, but there is nothing wrong with it, so no one can actually complain about it.

Im guessing there will only be a firmware update when a upcoming popular game doesnt work examples include

*Final Fantasy Tactics A2
*Final Fantasy IV (US release)
*Guitar Hero On Tour

despite all the rumors of supposed firmware updates coming for sdhc support, we never saw it and im pretty sure we would have by now if it would be possible. i agree with cyburn that popular games' glitches will likely be the only firmware updates we may see from now on.

slightly Off Topic, but how exactly do people plan to play GH:OT without going retail?

Seems like it would be rather ridiculous to try

I think R4 is now like all the other juggernauts out there such as Microsoft, EA & the USA once you get so big & dwarf all your competition everyone turns on you. There was a time were the R4 was far above most other cards & because of that has a lot of haters. And even though there are other cards out there that cost less & have a bit more features, as old as the R4 is it can still hold it's own.

what is that arm7???
and yes i wanted to play a pet game so what???
well it doesn't matter i just wait to the new update... maybe its a huge one

ARM7 is one of NDS's processor. NDS got 2 processors, named ARM7, which handles the touchscreen processes and ARM9, which handles other processes (i.e. loading areas, battles, items, dialogues, etc.). Worms Open Warfare 2 faces the same problem with R4 too.

Nobody will be an arsonist about you want to play a pet game. You see, R4 usually fails in garbage games, apart from Hulk and Worms OW2, which are good games. So, people thought you're trying to play a not popular game that R4team never tried to fix it, so please understand

It does and so does N5 kernel too but they both or all need patching to make them work on each others game card

and for the record even though the N5 kernel states its 1.19 its still a BLATENT rip off of 1.18 R4 kernel so does not load anything different!!

Can we just get an update for Band Brothers DX? It sucks when 4 other cards updated their firmware in a day to support that, and other things, and we just kinda have to sit and wait........

There will definitely be an update for the new save type if they want to keep selling carts. Not adding features is one thing, but leaving a save type unsupported will pretty much be the death of the cart. All the noobs that think R4 is the best flashcart in the world will hear about save problems and start thinking it can't save at all.

I suggest not getting the R4 and if you already have one, you really should think about getting a new flashcard, there are plenty of flashcards out there that are far cheaper and have better support, compatibility and features. The R4 has stopped being manufactured which means that it has reached the end of its life. You can expect only minor updates if any at all from the R4 team though right now, it doesn't look promising.

Several games, even some that came out over a year ago don't work on the R4. Also many newer games coming out have problems on the R4 either not running the game at all or the game is extremely buggy and freeze often. Also games with the new save type are not supported on the R4 so any games coming out with the new save type will not save. Also there are a few homebrew apps that have trouble on the R4 as well.

The R4 overall, is extremely limited and buggy. The cheat system has many flaws and can cause games to freeze or simply nt work when using cheats on some games. Also a few cheat types are not supported leaving you with a good many cheats not working on the R4. Also the R4 limits the number of cheats and games that gets displayed on the cheats page.

So basically, the R4 is on life support and has been for quite a long time now. Many newer flashcards have surpassed the R4 in many ways, including compatibility. The R4 is showing its age, thanks to hardware limitations (The R4 Firmware not being flashable), features like SDHC support and many others can never be added. The R4 was a fine cart when it first came out, but now its just an old, over prices flashcard.

The R4 has many clones as well, some supporting SDHC cards, these are not enhanced R4s nor improved, they simply had the hardware added to support SDHC cards while the loader/firmware they use is the exact same as the real R4DS byte to byte. This means that the clones have the same problems of the real R4DS and if the R4DS stops getting updated, so will the clones. So the R4 Upgrade V2, N5, R4DS III and so on are just all cheat knockoffs and should be avoided at all costs as the R4 Team is planning one last update that will brick the clones and possibly the DS that they are on.

Also I would like to point out, that I own an R4 myself and got it when it was one of the best flashcards on the market. Sadly thats not true anymore.
