I have my old R4 and I wanted to get it setup on my old dslite to give to a friend. I put the newest Wood firmware on it, but when I launch it I get stuck on Loading...

Anyone know what the issue could be?

I mean on a technical level. Do higher capacity micro SD cards have different architechture that the R4 can't understand or something?
A quick read tells me the cards are physically the same but the 'Card Specific Data' is different. Some info here:
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secure_Digital#Storage_capacity_calculations

Original R4's have an SDSC reader (probably because of the age of the original design), which isn't toward compatible with SDHC. Newer cards have SDHC readers which are backward compatible with non SDHC cards.
