Hi all! I've been lurking and I have a few questions, this gateway thing is overwhelming so I'd like to clear a few things up before I make any decisions.

1. I'm thinking of buying a PAL new 3DS. How does region locking with with gateway? For example, Fantasy Life and downloadable content. Can I ever use or but the dlc while in the USA?

2. Why do people buy them from other regions?

3. What is the benefit?

4. I see a lot of different file extensions, are they region specific?

5. Can I use any backup I want? I am contemplating buying a couple PAL games to start but want to mainly play US/NTSC games.

6. Does emunand allow online play? I see mixed statements. By emunand I mean 8.1-9.2.

This is what's keeping me from getting a New 3DS.

If anyone can help me I'd be eternally grateful.

Thank you.

1. GW is region free.
2. Because the n3ds isn't out in the us.
3. the n3ds is better in many ways, look it up.
4. What file extensions specifically?
5. See #1.
6. Yes but the 9.2 update WILL NOT HAVE EMUNAND SO NO ONLINE.
Why go for a PAL console though, that's what I'm wondering.

I don't think you understand my question. I know what PAL is. It's also in Australia as well. I'm asking if there is benefits to owning aPAL device over a NTSC.

Besides the obvious physical upgrades what is the benefits to owning a PAL N3DS vs a NTSC 3DS?

A lot of confusion because of the old video standards...
There are JP, EUR and USA 3DSs (and others like the iQue but who cares).
There are only JP and EUR n3DS.

Why is it better to get an EUR n3DS than a USA n3DS?
Because you don't need to go 85MPH on a Delorian.

Why is it better to get an EUR n3DS than a JP n3DS?
So you can select English as your system language.

Why a n3DS over a 3DS?
Because it is better, as in better 3D, C-Stick, lighter, better battery endurance.

Is it worth it to get an n3DS if you already have a 3DS XL right now?
IMHO, no.
The only confirmed exclusive game is Xenoblade Chronicles, and goes at 15FPS? with horribly washed textures. Perhaps if more exclusives are announced.

Thanks for the information, I don't understand the Delorian reference though. If emunand is supported though, can I access the esp and purchase while in America?

Oh definitely, just don't understand the correlation to me question. And how about access to e shop? If emunand is supported can we use it in the USA?

If emunand is supported, it will access the eShop to whatever region your 3DS belongs to. (US 3DS = US eShop / PAL 3DS = EUR eShop)
If you plan on using DLC, it has to match the region of the ROM you use

I don't think so but then again I've never tried it
If it doesn't work you could always buy eShop cards online (depending on the country you pick on the 3DS)

Forgive me, I'm new to this. Could you elaborate a little?
A 3dz is a ROM which has been renamed from .3ds to .3dz (for example: Pokemon.3ds to Pokemon.3dz)
It also has had a header inserted (very easy to do) to let the game play online on Gateway.
So .3ds for single player games and .3dz for multiplayer.

You should also note that you cannot transfer save files between both file types

Also, would it be a bad idea to buy a new Nintendo 3DS? I kinda want to use it.

Emunand got nothing to do with online, don't mislead. Emunand is there to
1) Stay at your old fw version in sysnand, while updating to the latest version in emunand to let you play games that require version higher than exploitable sysnand.
2) Access eshop(need latest version).
3) Avoid messing up with your sysnand by installing cia(can just start a new emunand)

Emunand is NOT NEEDED FOR:
1) Online game play. You will only need the game(either cia or 3dz) and the latest update of the game(if any)
2) Installing CIA(As shown in the video. You have chance of bricking your 3ds, although the chances are slim as long as you install from trust-able sources)

Thanks a lot to you all that are answering these questions, I can hack up an android phone no issues but I love gaming so I want to try my hands at this. I'm debating on getting a new 3ds from play Asia, apparently region won't matter.

Or when your player dies, you can say in code, if enemy exists, do nothing, but if enemy does not exist, then create enemy at certain spot. (This would be a pain tho for lots of emeies)

Easiest, simple way would be just restart scene, but player would restart from beginning.
