For starters, the hardware I have:
- 3DS XL (9.2.0-20U)
- n3DS XL (9.0.0-20U)

My old 3DS has a few virtual purchases (NES Games) so I need to do a system transfer, but that requires updating both to the newest firmware.

I have no issue updating the n3DS as I don't plan on using a flash card with it.
I'm giving the old one to my youngest sibling so I want to keep it flash card compatible.
But I'm not sure exactly what I want to do.

Option 1:
- Update the n3DS but not the original
- Order a Gateway, and wait.
- Setup Gateway, and update emuNand to 9.5
- Do system Transfer.
- Unlink nand's

Option 2:
- Update both systems
- Do system transfer now
2a- Order Sky3DS
2b- Wait to see if Gateway later supports 9.5

I have until 6/30/2015 to use up my Club Nintendo Coins, so I'm not in a rush to complete the system transfer. Also my sister wouldn't have an issue operating the Gateway, so as long as Option 1 would work I'm thinking about going that route.

Any info/ideas people can provide would be much appreciated.

And you should know that you can setup the emunand even without a Gateway. You just have to use the gateway launcher.dat to crate it then rxtools to update it.

Have to love the unknown ;) but that is why I've been leaning towards option 1.

Looks like I need to go re-read some things. I thought the Gateway was required to do emunand at all.
But if I can setup and use it now to do a system transfer that would make it the best of all the choices :)

Sorry for the wait, I needed to borrow my brothers SD card reader. (I only have microSD readers)

What I've Done:
- backed up sdcard
- downloaded gateway ultra 3.1.1
- placed launcher.dat on root of sd
- ds browser > http://go.gateway-3ds.com
- backed up system nand
- backed up sdcard
- ds browser > http://go.gateway-3ds.com
- format emunand
- Tried running Gateway mode, but was told I can't without the Gatway card. (I expected that)
- Tried running Clasic mode, got a warning about some features not working due to not having the card, 3DS just froze up with a black screen (due to not having the card?)
- downloaded rxtools
- used cdn_firm.exe
- copied firmware.bin and rxTools.dat to sd card
- restored DCIM and Nintendo 3DS folders to sd card (from backup) [I noticed the card now had gateway in it label]
- scanned the rxTools QR code (I should bookmark the url so I don't require the qr code every time)
- got warning about no slot0x25KeyX.bin, but my firmware is 9.2 so its not needed (may put it on the sd just to avoid the notice)
- in the menu the bottom left has: EmuNAND in green and NewKeyX in red
- chose Launch rxMode
- checked system settings, RX-E 9.2.0-20U, I am in emuNAND

When I left system settings an the system took a while (black screen, then a small flicker, then the menu reappeared), I re-entered system settings only to confirm my suspicions I was back on sysNAND.

I have a question for you.
How do I use rxtools to update?

I figure it is done the same way as with the Gateway but there seems to be no guide for rxTools, so I like confirmation first :)

- enter System Settings
- verify your on emuNAND (Gateway: GW 3DS x.x.x , rxTools: RX-E x.x.x)
- choose Other Settings
- choose System Update

Yes like that, and don't exit the system settings before updating. :)

@Xdqwerty, People who create revival services for the Wii end up in disaster, same goes for Pretendo lol.

@SylverReZ, atleast wiimmfii went fine although people only use it for Mario kart Wii
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
At least if they ban you for cheating, get another Wii. They're cheap as chips.

Remember when RiiShop was a thing?
  • BakerMan @ BakerMan:
    not really
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
It got shutdown because somebody "accidentally" leaked the database for the amount of people using the beta.
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
RiiShop is the laziest way of downloading Wii games. Did somebody not think of this through?
  • BakerMan @ BakerMan:
although i ended up accidentally changing my nand with no way of going back bc i didn't know you needed a gamecube controller to restore it (i have a wii minus/1.1, which doesn't have gamecube controller support)
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@BakerMan, I think you're talking about the recovery mode that the SaveMii used, and also was to restore softbricked systems.
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
If your NAND was hardbricked, then just buy another Wii. Or go with the dirty NAND flasher method.
  • BakerMan @ BakerMan:
and if i find the sd card i have my NAND backed up on, i can not only restore the NAND if i solder the right part in, but i can also put my NAND on dolphin, then i can play dolphin online, like PMEX Remix or MKWii Riibalanced
  • Xdqwerty @ Xdqwerty:
    Brb
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@BakerMan, Oh yeah, that was a thing too. Dolphin does support Wiimmfi.
  • BakerMan @ BakerMan:
yeah you just need to put your NAND backup with wiimmfi on it
  • BakerMan @ BakerMan:
ngl i feel like if a bunch of my friends have wiis and know how to get wiimmfi and back up their NAND, then we could do a PMEX Remix tournament
  • BakerMan @ BakerMan:
maybe even add UMVC3/DBFZ and make it a biathlon/triathlon
