Hacking Question regarding PS4 and PS-VR firmware dependancy

As I haven't gotten on the VR bandwagon yet, I am holding off on buying a set.

I figured I might pick up a cheaper used set down the line, but then I came to think:
If the previous owner has updated the VR firmware to whatever might be the newest version available, and my PS4 is stuck on 5.05 (hopefully something higher at that point, but still most likely outdated compared to the potential VR firmare), will it require me to update the console to a corresponding version?
