I have a old 3ds with luma on it. If I were to format the system with the sd card taken out will luma be also removed?

No, theres been a lot of these questions too. Luma is written to the core of the 3ds. formatting wont do shit to that. You will need to grab a few files from the finalizing steps of the guide. But ya wont lose luma.
