So I am modding my Wii U, I know you need a hard drive to install disk backups, but my question is can I use the hard drive I was using for downloads and save data? I have a 2TB hard drive I have VC games and save files on, can I put the Wii U disk backups on that drive, or do I need to get another hard drive? The drive was being used for my old saves and downloads, so I would like to know if it can be used for the backups, or if trying to use it that way will mess up anything. I don't want to backup my games and lose the saves on the hard drive. And on that note would dumping a backup replace the save, or create a new file. Before I start backing up things I would like tips on not messing up stuff, I like backing up and playing my disk rips, but I don't want to lose all the save files or VC files on that hard drive. It's a AC powered drive that has been fine for years. Just point me in the right direction.

The back up games will be in WUP, so yes they can be install them to the external drive. As for the saves, I think they will be fine. It's been a long time since I rip anything though. You can always back up the save with savemii first.

I just wanted to make sure my games and saves are fine, the hard drive was formatted for the Wii U ages ago, it was the one I was using to not need the NAND. Long before modding my Wii U I had used a 2TB hard drive and it is where my VC games and the save files went. My disk saves are on that hard drive, and SaveMii sees those saves too. All guides said the dumped disks should work on a hard drive as long as it was formatted to the Wii U, the hard drive is the one that is used for more storage, I just don't want to lose saves or anything once I dump a disk rip, I was going to backup my disks. The hard drive has been working for years, and it was powered by an outlet so it runs really well, the main thing I was hoping to work out was how everything saved and if the drive will be fine with the VC stuff, the dump is like you downloaded the game, so I was trying to not ruin my already made saves, but thank you for the help. I though the hard drive was good as it was already formatted for saving years ago. You got me in the right direction, and I was already backing up saves, before messing with ripping my disks.

IIRC the saves are on NAND when you play from disc, so you need to move them to USB in Wii Us data management (settings). Then the dumps should pick the saves up just fine.

Also maybe downloaded DLC and updates need to be moved to USB in Wii Us data management.

This is cause the game, DLC, updates and saves have to be on the same storage medium.

//EDIT: So this should work but no guarantee:
  1. Dump all saves with SaveMii Mod (this is so you have backups in case something goes horribly wrong).
  2. Go into Wii Us settings -> Data Management and move all save games, updates and DLC from internal memory (NAND) to external USB (hard drive).
  3. Use WUDD to dump all your discs.
  4. Use NUSspli to install all the dumps to USB (no need to move the dumped folders around).

I like the help, I did move my saves years ago, Nintendo had to fix my Wii U and I lost all my saves, so after restarting the games the saves have been on a 2TB hard drive for years, I got a hard drive in the first place to have more room, I like your info and I am not trying to be rude, I just happen to have moved the saves long before modding the Wii U. All I was trying to do was use the saves I moved years ago, so your info is good, long before modding this thing I had moved save files to the hard drive, this was after the repair and data loss, so thanks for the info, I am modding my Wii and Wii U and moving a lot between them when it comes to GameCube and Wii rips, so your help for Wii U rips is good, I was going to backup each game one by one, but I already hit the backup all. The reason I asked in the first place was I had moved all my saves and I was trying to make sure the disk rips could use the saves. And again thanks, you more or less said my idea anyway, so it's good to know I had the right logic, I will be moving Wii U stuff after the other modding, so this was to make sure I did not do anything stupid.

Updated info time, so the dumps of my games when dumped as an app if installed to the USB drive with my saves it mixes the save with the game. The dump is treated as a download version so a good safe rip made by my one games has been fine, the saves are safe as all it does is mix the save file with the dump. I hoped it would and it did.
