I have my Wii and Wii U right next to each other and they are both soft modded. I have a hard drive that is externally powered that is most of the time connected to my Wii U. But I sometimes connect it to my Wii when I play games that I'd rather use a GameCube controller on.

So my question is if I buy a Y splitter and connect my hard drive to both my Wii and Wii U at the same time will it work? Obviously I won't have both systems on at the same time. Thank you.

Unfortunately that's not how Y-Split cables work. One of the male ends is data and power, the other is only power. So whichever console that has the data end will pick it up, the other will not (it will draw power).

I was afraid of that. Thanks for the clarification. Does anyone know if such a splitter for my purposes exist or can be made?

Not 100% sure, but I feel like that kind of cable would be a great way to corrupt data if they access the HDD at the same time.
If this is about playing GC games with its controller, why not get a cheap usb adapter for wii u?

Didn't think about the possibility of corrupting data. I have a lot of Virtual Console games and I bought adapters that allow me to connect the actual original controllers (such as NES, SNES, Genesis, etc.) to the GameCube ports so I can play the games with the original controllers. As far as I know that GameCube adapter for the Wii U does not work on Virtual Console games.

What I'm trying to avoid is to have to rebuy adapters that allow me to connect those controllers to a Wiimote so that it thinks it is a classic controller. Maybe what I'll do is just buy a cheap flash drive and only put the games where I would need the GameCube ports for on it.

I'm not sure how this would work with any setup. The Wii U explicitly formats any drive (all partitions) the first time you plug it in. This format isn't compatible with the Wii or anything else.

I use 2 different drives. 1 for wii and 1 for wii u. External enclosures for hard drives are very cheap. like $9 for the 2.5inch laptop drive enclosures. You can use any Standard SATA/EIDE HDD in them. Best way to get hard drives is from old computers in the trash. I got a stack of drives pulled from old pcs. Even the 20GB drives are worth it.

thatsa laptop 2.5 inch one there are also 3.5 inch ones for desktop drives

There is a program called Ustealth which prevents the Wii U from seeing the drive and askin you to format. It works really well. You can read more about it here. https://gbatemp.net/threads/ustealth-wii-u-format-disk-nag-workaround.352786/

Anyway, thanks for everyone's suggestions. I think I'm just going to use 2 drives.

You could get a wireless switch adaptor, connect it to the splitter linked above and then use the remote to toggle Wii/ Wii U connected mode... although its a bit overkill.

I'm sure a cable like that exists or could be made, but you're more likely to screw up your HDD if anything, especially if they both are on at the same time. What I do is just have all my Wii stuff connected and setup for the Wii. I don't even touch the Wii U's vWii. I don't really see a reason to as it would just be less convenient.
