Hi there.

I currently had a full plan to buy a new 3ds Xl, and have of course notice and figured that non us models are much cheaper, so planned on getting a Japanese model, getting it CFW, then swapping the region out on in.

I know of the dangers with doing this, (Make sure you save NANE, no eshop, or updates)

And know the update problem has its solutions.

But I wondered if there was a better option, like just running different region games with cfw, and somehow translating the main menu, cause the obvious problem here is, I don’t speak more then two words of Japanese

CFW makes the system 'region free' for both digital titles and physical cartridges.

I know, but is there anyway to make the language for all the system menus, understandable for me?

You can't access NA eshop if you region change from JPN to NA.

I do know that as well, but would the JPN eshop be able to update NA carts?

At this point (with the stores fast approaching closure) pretty much all content (titles, title updates, dlc, etc) for all regions has been 'archived' and is readily available online.
So, the only problem you'll face is the system language, but I believe there are already threads on here that delve into how to fix that.

Can't update NA cart from JPN eshop, you need a NA system if you want to update from eshop.
