Homebrew Question about emunand

I noticed that gateway has said that they'll be releasing a means to boot gateway with a9lh. my question is how do I retain the emunand I have for gateway if I haven't installed a9lh on my new 3ds. I've installed a9lh on my o3ds, and I do remember having to reformat the emunand multiple times. how can I retain the emunand I have now if I have to format it? thanks!
