Hey guys,

posted this here because I didn't think it exactly belonged in Wi-Fi.

Here's my config:

I'm on latest 6.3 so I have access to the eShop. I'm gonna be picking up Pokemon X tommorow and the new Ace Attorney game in 2 weeks or so. I've never added anything onto my eShop account yet, and the only thing I've downloaded is free stuff from Club Nintendo.

So my question is, how would I get a tax-free eShop? I'm 90% sure I've never been asked for my state/zip on my 3DS, so I shouldn't have messed anything up.

Where/How would I do this? I read that this is possible somewhere but no one described how. I think it involved setting my zip to Delaware. I also read that once you set it somewhere else you can't change it. So how would I go about doing this? I want to be sure so I don't screw up when I add funds tomorrow.

Would I enter it when adding funds? Purchasing games? Somewhere else entirely?

Thanks in advance for your help.

I think it asks you just before purchasing a game, but if you need to change it any time you can (from the main menu) tap the menu button, "settings/other", location settings, and change the zip code right there.

93561 works for me! I've never been charged tax, and this is my actual area, lol. California. (And you can choose any of the town options listed, its all the same town just different communities)

  • The US eShop does not accept non US credit cards so you can't add money directly. If you want to use that eShop.
  • You can get a bit cheaper prices by going into system settings and change region to California, Georgia or Florida since you don't pay taxes in those states.
  • You can alternatively set up your eShop to Canada, Mexico or Brasil since they allow non-US credit cards, however, you can't avoid tax in Canada, and you lose Club Nintendo benefits in Mexico and Brazil.
  • You can freely change your country on the Console Setup as much as you like to access the various eShops, but your cash balance is locked to country. If you have $10 in your US account, then switch to Canada, the balance will be $0, but if you switch back to US you'll have $10 again.
  • Worst thing that could happen if you get "caught" not being a US resident is that your CN account gets deactivated, but you definitely won't be banned from buying on eShop if that's what worries you.

I do it myself. When you're in the eShop, it should've asked for your location or to set your location. Set it to a New Hampshire zip code as they have NO SALES TAX for online purchases.

1. Turn on your 3DS and go to the eShop
2. Go to Menu (top right) > Settings/Other
3. Scroll down to the Location Settings
4. Press Change Address
5. Enter a Zip Code from a state/province that doesn't use online taxes (i.e. 03031 for New Hampshire)

DONE!

The benefits of being Montanan. This seems to be the state people always forget in their lists. That and Oregon. The only MT zip NOT to use is 59937, since that town has local sales tax. 59923 (The Zip I used to live in) works fine. So you have PLENTY of options

Thanks guys! Yeah, I'm using a US Card so that's not an issue. Just changed my location to the one mentioned in the first post.

Thanks again for all the replies!

i thought everybody knew cocktails are like 75% ice
  • Veho @ Veho:
    Yeah but not like this.
  • Veho @ Veho:
It's not like they're complaining that their Slurpee is 99% ice or something, but if the cocktail calls for "shot of vodka, shot of vermouth, shot of gin, shot of Campari, three shots of juice, squirt of lemon" and ends up being a thimbleful of booze, that's a problem.
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
the funny thing is cocktails in norway are only allowed to have 1 20ml shot of booze
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    so..... yeah
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
we're used to only having a thimbleful of booze

    Booo.
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
same thing if you want whisky on the rocks or something, you can't get a double
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
but you could buy as many shots of whisky (or anything else) as you want and ask for a glass of ice and pour them in
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    it's dumb
  • Veho @ Veho:
    Maybe.
  • Veho @ Veho:
There was a comparison of the number of Ibuprofen poisonings before and after they limited the maximum dosage per box or per pill (i'll look that up). No limit on the number of boxes you can still buy as many as you want, so people argued it was pointless.
  • Veho @ Veho:
But the number of (accidental) poisonings dropped because drinking an entire package of ibuprofen pills went from "I need a new liver" to "I need a new box of Ibuprofen".
  • Veho @ Veho:
Here we have ketoprofen that used to be prescription-only because of the risk of toxic dosages, but then they halved the dose per pill and sell them in bottles of six pills apiece instead of twenty and it doesn't need a prescription any more. Yes you can buy more than one bottle but people simply don't.
