"PSPgo Rewards" programme - Sony's UMD Compensation Sche

The rumour mill has been fired up for ages wondering what Sony intended to do to placate current PSP owners loaded with UMD's which would be incompatible with the PSPGo....a 1-1 trade in scheme was probably the most popular idea. Well hold your breath for the Sony Masterplan!

Three free games for PSPgo upgraders

Sony has announced that people with existing UMD games who want to upgrade to the new PSPgo, due out on 1st October, will receive three "free" downloads of full games.

This "PSPgo Rewards" programme involves registering a PSPgo on PSN, then logging on to PSN with your existing PSP with a UMD in the drive, which allows you to download a special PSPgo theme, which then presents you with a voucher via email for use on the PSPgo.

The voucher can be redeemed for three out of 17 available titles. We've asked Sony for the full list, but in the meantime the press release mentions Killzone: Liberation, SOCOM: US Navy SEALs Fireteam Bravo 3, WipEout Pure, Everybody's Golf, echochrome, Buzz!: Brain Bender, Buzz!: Master Quiz, LocoRoco and Patapon.

PSPgo Rewards will be available from 1st October until 31st March 2010 and is open to people with any existing PSP model and at least one UMD who buy and register a PSPgo during that timeframe.

The issue of how people with existing PSPs might "upgrade" their UMD collections to work on the download-only PSPgo has been debated a fair bit since the system's E3 unveiling, and the popular choice would seem to be a trade-in programme of some sort. We've asked Sony whether that's a possibility or whether PSPgo Rewards will be the final word on the subject.

The platform holder has previously said that it intends to support UMD despite the launch of PSPgo, with games due to be released both digitally and on the proprietary disc format for the foreseeable future.

atleast my theory of registering some kind of serial number from your game is close enough.

My previous theory is that you need to give a code ala-nitnendo-product code to sony and you'll be entitle to re-download it for free.

So you just have to use your old PSP with the UMD to get a free download on the PSP Go? So why all the negative reactions? I'm sure the number of supported games will greatly increase. At least you can keep your UMDs and use them on the PSP Go as well. As far as I'm concerned, this is much better than trading them in.

Edit: oh wait, you get three free games if you have a PSP with at least one UMD. Well, that kind of sucks because you still won't be able to play your old games.

i actually got both, never really saw much out of them, basically Playstation, not Sony, never left a lasting impression. That doesn't mean i never bought their products, just never enjoyed them as much as compared to others.

It's still shitty compensation for former PSP owners. If you bought like 20 PSP games, all you get is 3 of them on the PSP Go? I mean, could they not do something like add a code for each game (like Club Nintendo does for points) to get that game for your PSP Go? I just think this system will flop. It's ahead of it's time, which is a good thing, but just sucks with the lack of backward compatability.

I have no plans on getting a PSPgo, nor a PSP. But I noticed something amusing. Go buy the game, do this "rewards" thing, take the game back. That's 17 free games.

Most retailers over here aren't even gonna stock many units. Can't blame them seeing actual game sales count more for their business, especially used games.
