Hardware PS3 YLOD, what causes it?

More bad luck. I sent it to reballing service from eBay. Paid extra for a fan mod to help with overheating and make it quieter. Guy sends me a message and says my powersupply is also bad. WTF! The first guy I took it to said he swapped a new powersupply in to it. Whatever I pay for the powersupply too, this repair officially got more expensive than a new PS3. It looks like the guy sent it back to me overnight which I did not realize, I should have had it back on Thursday. It looks like it got stolen from my doorstep and I don't think there is going to be anyway to get my money back since Fed Ex confirmed delivery. Fucking shitty luck....don't know if I want to sink anymore money in to PS3 even though I have games I never finshed playing.

Always get the slim version the cech25 series.

I have a friend who is an expert repair guy for these things so I'm covered with pretty much anything. He said that it's not that much worth getting a ps3 phat today and always to go for the slim versions.
I recently bought a defective ps3 phat online for $24. The only problem is its hdd is dead and the owner just want to get rid of it. So I bought it. Turns out that unit was already jailbroken when I replaced its hdd.
I already have a ps3 slim that runs perfectly so I would probably just sell the extra ps3 phat to any of my friends who wants it.

All phats will YLOD at some point, even it has worked fine for a long time. It's poor cooling management/power consumption and solder used, etc. Slims are prone to fail too, yet not as high as phats. Reballing will help, yet it's not 100% proof, as once it's YLOD its best to get rid.

Best one to have imo is the super slim out of the lot. It's the same with the 360's. Jasper model out of the phats are the best, yet the rest will fail at some point or use a Trinity/Corona Slim.

We have PS3 SLIM for about 5 years now and never have a YLOD so far.

Yeah....I found out the only way I would get any refund was if the sender made a claim with Fed Ex, apparently the recipient can't make the claim.

Originally when I told him I never received he told me to talk to Fed Ex. Fed Ex did an investigation and advised me to file a claim. All deliveries are automatically insured for $100 so even though I paid this guy $177 I should at least be able to get some money back.

The dude basically tells me to fuck off. He tries to blame me for getting the package stolen saying I should have checked my email and been by the door waiting or something...I was out of town and didn't get home till about 11PM and the package was already gone. I didn't get any delivery emails, and that package was delivered over night (ground shipping local in so cal) while I was expecting it to take longer. He says it's too much trouble and that it will take like 30 days (as if I care that it will take time, why should he?).....all the dude had to was fill out an online form that I sent him a link to.

Basically I am pretty pissed at this piss poor customer service of ps3specialist.com

It was also suspicious that he told me I needed a new power supply when a previous repair place told me they already replaced it weeks before.

I would advise against dealing with businesses who treat their customers like this.

If you don't have your PS3 standing up and have webman installed. Fan control set to 45-65% depending on your model of PS3. Might be slightly noisy, but it will never YOOD. Also if you cut a hole in the bottom for phat or top for slim. Again, air flow will go straight out of the top, eliminating the YLOD. Using lead free solder doesn't help, but since that's what Sony decided to do. The above are work around a to solve the problem. My phat and slim still live to this day, I used a 20mm blade to cut a hole and that worked fantastic!

Just uploaded a picture of my fan control and core temps. This has been on for around 4 hours playing Def Jam Fight for NY. Ignore the start up time. That's how long it has been in the XMB.

oh, but i have my ps3 always laid down horizontally, so standing is better eh.
but i still dont understand how it should work, so i would like to see how he has his ps3 placed and where exactly that hole is!

i have had no luck with my phat ps3, as it usually tends to go high (CPU) after only about 20-30 minutes of gaming.
like it usually is at around 60 cpu which is fine, and after some gaming it hits 78 (red mark!!) q.q

Damn, I was going to send my ps3 to ps3specialist for my glod slim, but I'm having second thoughts now after reading this.

Fat: The hole has to be done on the bottom of the console due to where the blade fan is located. Doing random holes on the console will be have benefit.
Slim: Hole has to be on the top due to fan location.

I will take a picture of my console later tonight and submit it. - To find correct location. I measured how wide the fan is. How far away the fan is from the edge of the case, horizontal and vertical. This is what gave me the location to drill the hole.

Above is exactly what my PS3 looks like. Im going to sand and probably wrap the top with a design. - I have put mesh over the top of the fan. Heat gunned it to the plastic so it doesn't move and stops anything getting stuck in to the fan.

i am a clumsy one and am afraid i might break the whole cover tbh.

There was an issue with both? That's some bad luck right there. Did he try reflowing it or something else?

Reball is the best fix out there and in theory it is permanent but some people seem to report it failing again. Maybe the theory about the lead free solder isn't quite true, who knows. Maybe the reports of failure are a minority of the total number of them done...

If you mean your downloaded games then you will be able to log into PSN and download them again but as far as your saves go you're out of luck unless you had them backed up either on PS+ or some other way.

if it's reball with lead solder it should be permanent it stress with thermal cycle and crack, if it' reball with lead free it would fail again.
