Japanese gaming website Pocketnews has reported that the PS3 has received a minor hardware alteration. The changes include a new version of the RSX graphics chip that uses 15% less power. With the cost of electricity these days, this is pleasing news. Plus, it should help cut down on that dreaded ‘yellow light of death’ which causes your PS3 to overheat and die.

The new model is named the CECH-2100A, that’s one to remember. Its GPU is 45nm in size, reduced down from 65nm. The model also has a smaller power supply which weights 30g less, down from 421g. The cooling unit has been on a diet too with it now weighing only 408g, down from 545g.

We were impressed by the lightness and efficiency of the Slim, but this new model goes to new levels. The PS3 has come a long way from its original fat and power-hungry self.

Sony have lost money on every PS3 they have sold, but the Slim was rumoured to be close to breaking even. It remains to be seen whether this new model will finally see Sony make a profit.
Source.

Just as I get my one, god damn it, well I'm happy with mine anyway. 250gb of sexiness sitting in my bedroom.
funny how i misread 'boredom' instead of 'bedroom' ... funny anagram?
my 360 fandom must have gotten to my head
speaking of 360, i'd really like to see a slim too!

This is not new. I have that model and have had it since November. You may want to check a different source. I could be wrong because Im at work and cannot look at my PS3, but I am almost positive it is the same model. I also remember hearing this news late last year. Once again, I could be wrong.

I wonder if it would actually be slim. It makes me lol inside the fact it's called PS3 slim when it's far from it, it's actually bigger than the PS2 fat.

You're probably confusing the CECH-2001A with this CECH-2100A

Pretty soon, Costy

The new Valhalla motherboard is without doubts a lot smaller, I presume they'll probably cut on the DVD drive size too and do a "slim" version

I wish this came out a lot sooner, because it's been a little over a full month since my bro bought our Slim so we can't get a full refund on it >_> . Electricity in my neighborhood is really expensive (Average is $300 per month, then shot up to $600 once last year) so I really need something like this.

That is a bit strange indeed

I guess the hard drive just takes up a lot of space. Comparing to the original Xbox, the PS3 Slim is pretty small.

the yell light isnt a complete failure neither. About 95% of yellow lights on ps3 are dead hard drives. google it if you don't believe me.

it is mainly a complete confirmed stable HW alteration... the prev one had been released but i guess they didnt test long term problems and considering the demand for better sales, this is very understandable... i dont remember such issues happening in the older consoles eg ps1, n64 or ps2...devs having problems meeting deadlines and keeping it perfect
