PS1/2 Ps2 softmod?

Darn it, I already bought a $5 8mb card. Was that a bad idea? Also, would a 32gb usb work with the ps2?

You'll just have to test the drive. Don't worry about the limited space-you only need it for FreeMCBoot, uLaunchElf and maybe OPL/ESR. (Total under 2MB) You can leave other apps on your flash drive and just load them from there-no need to install them.

Wait I heard of Esr which is the loader that you use to patch the isos and then run with but what is opl? Is it better?

Generally flash drives do not work with the PS2's USB ports. I keep a couple of ancient 128MB and 256MB flash drives just for this reason, I kid you not I probably have a dozen other flash drives ranging from 1GB to 16GB and not a single one of those work.

Edit: In case my post was not clear the 128MB and the 256MB ones do work, but they are the only ones I have found that do work.

I bought the ARMax EVO years ago just for the ability to install game saves to the memory from the USB stick that comes with ARMax, but it never worked. The PS2 never recognized the stick was even plugged in. I have tried several size sticks but none have worked, from 256kb to 16Gb. Any idea?

Try the brand Lexar... not sure why but they seem to work the most often. The PS2's I have are all model 7's not sure if that has anything to do with it but all the forum posts I read about it said that all the PS2's where picky about USB thumb drives.

The two I have that work look like these.

And yes they both are jump drives....

Edit: Also are you sure your USB ports work? And does the USB drive that came with the Evo work in the PC? I am pretty sure that its just a thumb drive to the PC.

Edit 2: You might also try formating to Fat16 or Fat32 not sure which one but its worth switching to see if that helps.

Yes the flash drive works in PC. It was made to use with the PS2 also. No I don't think the ports work on my PS2 that ia why I asked in my original post if anyone knew how to fix it. Some of the flash drives I have light up when their being used, but they never do in my PS2. That is why I say the ports aren't working. I need to know how to fix then.

You can use multimeter to check soldering between motherboard and usb ports. If the port is in frequent use it's likely to damage in those areas.

Softmod a PS2 phat/slim is really easy.

After some time and reading stuff of how to mcboot, is this my final Ps2 setup:
PS2 phat PAL with a network card + Maxtor 500 gig Ide HDD and a fake 32MB memorycard.
PS2 slim PAL scph 77004 with a open/close switch (for swapmagic 3.8/swapcos)

On the 32mb memorycard:
MCboot 1.8
Cosswap
HDloader
HD Advance
Open PS2 Loader 0.8

I use a cheap ass 2 gig usb memory stick for installing mcboot and copy some ELF apps on my memory card.

Mosly i use my PS2 phat for playing games, because the load times from HDD are better then of a dvd/cd.
Also i use some cheap PS2 to component cable on my LCD tv.

HD Advance

HDAdvance is pointless it's just a reskin of HDLoader 0.7.(something)
OPL is up to 0.9 (with an extra .1 if you care about correctness)
I'd assume you have ULE too....you may also wish to investigate PS2PSXe if you have Cogswap

I'm gonna be using discs for a while but when I do get enough memory, what hdd should I buy that's cheap and doesn't have a lot of hassle setting up? Like if I buy an internal hard drive do I need stuff like enclosures?

If you have a Phattie, any will do as long as it fits. If you don't have a classic PS2 and want to connect the drive over USB, turn around, go buy an Ethernet cable and use SMB like everybody else - USB loading has really poor compatibility. If you have a computer, you can use Network Loading - that's all you really need and only a handful of games have issues with it.

Thanks. I will be using the hdd with a Phat PS2. Have any recommendations and also a place to sell the network adaptor thing?

Sell? You need the network adapter. Unless you mean "buy", in which case, EBay - they're discontinued so you might have a hard time finding one in stores.

Okay, so I finaly got my hacked ps2 what apps do u guys recommened? I know how to launch the apps off the usb but how do i add them to the menu? Also can I order how the apps look on the fcmb menu? I was really lucky that the ps2 could read my 32 gb usb.
