Hi! I've tried to look around the threads here but haven't found anything on it (or anywhere else really either, but my google-fu is notoriously bad). I'm looking to get my PS2 to play video from USB flash drives, but don't really care about getting burnt games working.

I'm wondering, is it possible and/or easy? Also, would I have to have an AR Max EVO disc as indicated by the softmod tutorial? I don't know anyone who has one of those, and I'm kinda too poor to buy one.

If anyone knows anything on this, I'd be happy for the help :)

Possible yes, but now days video are mostly encoded in H264, and while PS2 SMS can play XVID, it isn't optimized toward it.

In essence PS2 is too weak for today's video, unless you plan to re-encode video into MPEG2.

my Wii has trouble with most video files i have played on it unless they were low quality, i remember watching some things on my ps2 a long while back but the video would lag and skip quite a bit. you would be better off with an Orginal Xbox with a soft mod and XBMC installed.

Goshdarnit, what a waste then lol. Being able to play video (I assumed it was) was one of the reasons I bought a ps2 :( Very well, ratchet & clank is still a good reason for the buy i guess.
EDIT: on the other hand, the video usually is low quality since high quality doesn't make any difference on my old 13 dollar fatscreen TV.

EDIT2: If I go through with this, what video format should I use to play the videos? Most of my videos are around 500x300 pixels so they're pretty low-qual.

What about burning DVD's out of your videos? That's the only alternative I can think of.

Well, that'd require me to softmod it regardless, and wouldn't that require me to hardsub all those old AVI's? Hardsubbing AVI's are a hassle and takes an awful lot of time (at least compared to MKV's lol), at least as far as I've found out. I'm not really good with video though (actually I'm kind of a complete newb when it comes to both consoles and movies, I'm decently computer-savvy though), so I might have missed something.

You are better off buying a hardware video player for your video needs. SMS player for PS2 is long abandoned so it isn't capable for today's need.

500 x 300 is not a resolution that is supported by DVD-Video, so some works must be done to pack it in DVD-Video format. Similarly you must convert audio to either AC3, DTS, or MP2. Plus you are only allow to use basic text style based subtitles.

Ah well, that schucks. Don't have cash for that kinda thing. Thanks anyway.

Trumpet is insisting a little more than he should...
I have watched countless movies on my PS2 a few years ago before i got my wii.
