I have tried to exploit my PS2 slim by using FreeDVDBoot in order to install freeMCBoot onto my memory card. Every single time I try to make it work I get the issue of "unable to read disc". I will list my PS2's potentially important information below:

Slim model
Console: SCPH-70001
CD Player: 2.00
DVD Player: 3.10U

I tried all of the troubleshooting methods in CTurt's github. It could read a DVD movie when I put it in, it can read any of my PS2 games right now. I am using Verbatim DVD-R for my burning, and the lowest speed for my drive is 4x. I have burned 3 separate DVD's using Windows10's default burner, CDBurnerXP, and ImgBurn. I have re-downloaded the ISO every single time just in case of a bad download, the ISO I am using is the "All PS2 Slims - English Language.iso" as that should work with my DVD Player version. I have turned on the diagnostics with every single one of the disc and none of them are able to be read. I have read that "DVD high compatibility" in CDBurnerXP might help but last time I tried that the DVD never progressed in writing for 10 minutes so I gave up, I am now going to leave my computer attempting to use that setting for a full day, if 24 hours pass and the DVD still isn't burned I am giving up on that being a viable solution right now it is already at the 10 minutes I will update everyone if it completes and is a success.

EDIT: It finished burning, and it also failed to read even when I put the PS2 into Diagnostic mode.

The laser is probably dead because there's a flaw with the mechacon where using burned discs causes the mechacon to crash and burn out the tracking coils. PVR-802 is the laser module you should get, considering that yours is a V12. It's also highly recommended to install the Matrix PIC Fix which requires basic soldering skills to achieve.

Thank you for the reply, but I'm confused. DVD's of movies and my PS2 games work, it is only my burned DVDs that are failing to read. So when you say "dead" do you just mean that the laser is unable to read burned DVDs or that in a short amount of time it will likely fail to read everything else as well?

Regardless, when you say "basic soldering skills" would that be something I could do as effectively an introductory project to soldering? I don't have a soldering kit and the closest thing I've come to soldering is that I have a little bit of wielding experience. I'm fine with risking the PS2 to fix the issue, but I would prefer maximize my chances of success.

Between easy and medium range.

The pads you need to solder to, are not all that difficult. You have the big pads like '+5V', 'GND', and 'J'. The tricky part is by soldering to 'K' which is above a small cap close to the CDVD controller. Go with a conical soldering tip that is enough for you to easily tack the points, a microscope or phone can also be useful to check your connections.

What I mean, is that like all game consoles with disc drives, the laser will most certainly wear out regardless if you're booting from a burned disc or original. Wear and tear comes from age.

Okay, I will try all of this though I'm definitely going to be taping up my board a lot to hopefully avoid accidents. I know heat resistant tape exist for Soldering (I've looked into soldering in the past) but that "K" area looks tiny. Will also watch some installation videos to better get an idea before the parts arrive. Inform you in like a week or so how it went, hopefully I don't brick the PS2. I don't know how good heat resistant tape is at preventing you from damaging something, but hopefully it is good at it.

EDIT: After pricing the stuff I would need, that's actually going to be a 2 weeks thing minimum. Need to get my next paycheck before that. Yes, I know it isn't that much money but I do need to save some money and that would go over what I allow myself to spend on "wants". Shipping cost Nickle and dime ya.
