I'm a little glad I played the demo first because I was thinking about picking one up since the prices for the game was quite reasonable. The demo drops me off in the middle of a battle and I can recognise the most of the characters but some had me thinking, "where is she from again?". Gameplay is usual tactics game but with the battle scenes incorporating a, "mash A button" to pull of combos. Beautiful sprite work but unfortunately not something I'll be picking up on the day.

Mashing different buttons doesn't even do much. It's just a slightly different attack.

Sadly most of the characters seem to appeal more to the Japanese audience so while the concept is cool, I probably won't be getting it. I only care for Ryu and Ken.

Holy crap is this demo satisfying. And it's only "Demo A", so maybe/hopefully they'll release more demos with the other characters in them. But, holy shit. I was planning to buy this before the demo came out, and now it's a must buy after playing the demo.

It's the same as a strategy game, it only looks like a button mashing fighter, but really you just select 3-5 attacks as slow as you want and it does them for you. Just like choosing attack/skills in an RPG it's just a lot prettier and you feel like you're doing more. :)

That being said I came extremely close to dying my first try. I had one pair of characters left. And I wasn't expecting the Aragami to appear, I actually forgot God Eater was included <3

This game's pretty cool.

The combat beyond the TRPG seems kinda button mashy at first but once you learn about the attack boosts, support/solo attacks, not-so-random critical hits and try to tie them altogether for cross attacks shit gets really awesome. The "EXP" mechanic was a bit confusing when I first picked it up because I thought it was like a level up meter but I kind of like how it's implemented with supers, defenses, counters, and absolute defenses (or whatever it's called). Aesthetically the music and animations look great and it's nice to still high quality sprite work still being used.

My only gripes with it are the lack of difficulty and demo roster, but I think those are just demo issues. Hopefully we'll get another demo later since this one's named "Demo A"

I went ahead and gave the demo a shot, and although it isn't perfect, it's promising. My main gripe is that they try to make it feel like you're doing more in the battles, when really, it's just another TRPG. Not really knowing how to play, I did beat the demo my first try with two pairs of characters left (one nearly dead, the other kind of a trump card that I figured out early on), and once I started figuring out how to properly utilize experience, it wasn't so bad. Use of experience really could make or break a battle. This already taught me that sometimes it's better to let a pair go and have the special attack than to burn 20% experience on potentially protecting them.

I probably won't pick this up when it comes out, but it's definitely a neat idea.

It should probably be noted that XP and Exp are different stats, XP is more like MP or SP but seems to be shared between the whole army, guess it stands for Cross Points or someshit.

I got it last night and "downloaded it later"

For those of you having trouble, im guessing you never played Haken's Boob Adventure. Its a combo game basically. You let your characters preform moves and cancel and chain moves together to get high damage outputs.

You shouldn't wait too long, you should use the next attack just before your previous attack stops and the enemy hits the ground. Keeping the enemy in the air longer will increase the number of crits (and thus damage) you do, and I think using all three/four (one pair has 4) of your standard attacks will give you another attack.

I think I finished the demo on my first try without anyone dying or using items.

I know. :) I just meant that it isn't super quick like a fighter, some people thought it was a fighter if they didn't really watch a lot of videos on it.
I admit when the game was announced for Japan I thought it was going to be like Jump Ultimate Stars! Wish it was, but I enjoy the game as it is now too.

Have people never played Valkyrie Profile games? Because combat plays like that, IIRC. And VP Covenant of the Plume on the DS was a turn-based strategy game as well. And was extremely punishing as well.
