So at first glance I thought this was really stupid because I don't care about cheating to have max stat amiibos... However, I did a little more research and found this:

It looks like it is more than just a cheating device. It actually lets you back up your amiibo data, thus giving you the power to switch between multiple saves for multiple games. This is very handy! And it maaaay even make it possible to store a different character than your amiibo figure... But I'm pretty sure that would get them in some legal trouble so that seems unlikely to be supported officially. (That's not to say that this tool won't give some insight which makes it easy to tamper with the data "unofficially", though.)
