i dont see why it would need to, even most open source chips have dvd update now.
and if you installed an open source chip without foreseeing the need to update it manually then you welcome all frustrations you receive

Yeah, when you have DVD update all you need is a single DVD-RW and you're set forever.

Barring another SMG incident though I can't see what else drivechips will ever need to do, though. I've been using openwii for a couple years and it's been great, although it and YAOSM are the only two open-source projects still supported and AFAIK the devs for both chips have worked with each other to help keep each other's chips up to snuff.
