So i have a wii with a cyclowiz installed with 4.0 firmware. This x-mas I picked up an external hard drive to load games off of. I already have the homebrew channel installed and I know I have to install a usb loader channel, but I am not sure if I need to install a cios. If so what one do I need to install? Most of the guides here look like they are for softmodding the wii to load games from the disc channel and from the usb drive so I don't know what guide I need to follow. Also what loaders work with the NSMB without having to do any patching to the iso?

You DO need to install cIOS 249 or/and cIOS 222 and 223. cIOS 249 should work if you keep the games in a WBFS partition. (using a partition manager) If it doesn't try cIOS 222/223. If you boot from a FAT partition, you definitely need cIOS 222/223.
