Hacking Pokemon Leaf Green save patch for carts

I recently discovered Pokemon Pearl. As silly as the cartoon and the whole franchise is, the game is actually very good (and addictive!). I want to try putting Pokemon Leaf Green on my old flashcart, a Smartcard 128mb, probably exactly the same as EZFlash. I tried writing it to the cart, but the game doesn't get past the intro and just goes black.

Is my cart too small? Do I need to patch the game? And if so, where can I get this patch? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
