Haha, you're not doing much to dispell my doubts...

Maybe I should just switch to Sky3DS... the latest versions allow rewriting the roms on the cart, right? I don't think I'm ever gonna need more than 10 games at once.
I understand GW's methods might sound like trouble. It's the same for me as well.
But at least it's pretty much future-proof. Sky3DS isn't. It will be eventually blocked. Probably soon.

Main issue with sky3ds is potential blocking (probably in 9.5 is my guess), which neimod himself confirmed that there were certain calls to the cart which didn't give a proper reply back, as well as the lack of region free (big issue for me personally since I imported a PAL N3DS and I'm in the US). If you're going to go for a sky3ds though I'd wait until Gateway releases (potentially) in the next 48 hours.

For real? I thought it was supposed to be the last weekend ;)

Ah, right. So that means that Sky3DS will become the next cheap crappy R4 clone where you have to buy a new card every time there is an update.
Potentially, I guess. They've already done a hardware revision in like... 2 months? What stops them from doing more of 'em?
They'll have more and more customers as long as people buy >9.2 systems.

The reason DLC didn't work with retail carts was because it was running in Classic Mode on a 4.5 3DS
I don't think the new Gateway update will have a Classic Mode so DLC may potentially work with retail carts

Yeah, I think everyone in the hype thread has come to the conclusion that GW's sales team doesn't know crap about the release date. It seems garyopa knows quite a bit though:

There's no harm in trying, seeing as how it won't be able to download the update.

Yeah no this isn't possible. I've tried with my 9.2 N3DS and retail Pokemon Y that I thought would be able to go online with the new system. turns out i need to update it first and you can't update without connecting to the eshop without updating your firmware without blocking eshop via wifi dns or some other method.

I do have a question though. Will gateway be able to region free retail carts? like say if I have retail carts from different regions, will I be able to use gateway to somehow "convert/exploit" the 3ds so that I can play carts from different regions?. I'm not too keen on digitising everything and finding .cia and .3dz and whatever else is necessary.

if you already have the most recent software update installed (for whatever game you're playing), then you should be able to play online without updating your system firmware

Really? DLC doesn't work with retails carts?
This Gateway is starting to look like more trouble than it's worth ...

if you have LEGIT dlc you bought yourself, sure, that will work with retail carts (= it will work in classic mode)
but if you did not buy the dlc, then you will need GW's patches to let you use it, and classic mode does not give us these patches.

gateway is no trouble at all.
trying using dlc you didn't buy with sky3ds, lol

Ever heard of not having a 4.5 3DS?
And? I still don't understand your anwer. If emuNAND/classic mode will be available in 8.x/9.x-firmwares is something we don't know yet. So all knowledge originates from using Gateway with a 4.X-3DS. So what's the "update-problem" regarding the Gateway-classic-mode? I thought its still based on emuNAND?

I'm not trying to attack anyone. I never owned a Gateway-card, but planning to purchase one. I already own a bunch of legit games + DLC and just want to know how I'll be able to use it in the future ;)

In a situation of no emuNAND, your retail content should still work.

In a situation of emuNAND, classic mode would exist, and your retail content should still work.

It hasn't been explicit whether or emuNAND will work or not, but it seems illogical for them to not allow access to it. They are able to more or less run unsigned code as they please and can appease customers by letting them update to new firmwares in a sandboxed environment, meaning no work arounds or new entry points for exploits in the newer FW versions.

Just to be sure, if I have 9.2 sysNAND, I can't play Omega Ruby online because 9.2 won't be able to get the patch from the eShop, right? I've got everything working with emuNAND updated all the way, this is just hypothetical.

You can. Either https://gbatemp.net/threads/release-free-multi-patcher.391945/ or there is also a patch that can be ran through the web browser that enables eShop access (latter is o3DS only, but doesn't require you to be running some sort of signature check patched CFW (or GW))
