Indeed. I like jayz reviews and am awaiting gamers nexus 2080ti review too. However, based on jayz review it will be a 1080ti.

I wouldn’t upgrade in two years either unless a game I LOVE (WoW, FF16, DQ12, a new mmo or something) would greatly benefit from an upgrade.

Now the question is which variant 1080ti offers the most performance?

GamersNexus has been "hammering" nvidia ever since they announced the RTX cards. I still haven't had the time to watch any of the reviews... but definitely will watch Jay's review ASAP.

Pretty much any gpu that has a custom heatsink/fan with axial fans will help a ton with performance. You'll also be able to squeeze a bit more out of the GPU by overclocking it. I've got a Gigabyte AORUS G1 1080 with a factory OC, but I still managed to squeeze more 70MHz out of it, reaching 2076MHz on the core and +600MHz on the RAM leading to 11.2GHz. Custom fan curve will keep the card under 72C at all times while pretty much inaudible.

TL;DR: You can't go wrong with any 1080Ti with a beefy "3rd party" cooler on it.

Oh it’s between a Corsair h150i pro or a Noctua NH-D15S and depending on benchmarks/etc I’m leaning toward the air cooler at this time.
I have the H100i Pro and it cools an 5820k with a 1ghz overclock just fine

Well I got that video card and it turns out it’s just a reference card spec with ftw 3 hsf on it. “DT” model (de-tuned from ftw 3 speed to stock).

EVGA forums state DT models are cards that weren’t stable at ftw speeds. I nearly returned it until I saw true ftw 3 models cost more than the 2080. Further research shows that a lot of overclockers still get very high performance out of the DT line and stock 1080 ti performance is still nothing to sneeze at.

The waiting game continues for the i9-9900k though. It’s popped up for sale here:

https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.re..._and_9700k_listed_for_sale_at_provantage_513/

This is promising for a late sept/early October reveal. I’ll be waiting for Microcenter to have it listed before I preorder it/buy it.

I did choose to put the Noctua air cooler on it though!

Update: I returned the DT model and picked up an EVGA 2080 xc gaming card instead! Haha I got it at less than the DT model so it was a no brainer there ;)

Reviewers state the 2080 is only a good buy if you can get it at the same cost of the 1080 ti, which makes sense since the 2080 stock performs on par/slightly higher that the sc2/ftw3 . Also overclockers are getting excellent performance from an oc 2080 too.

Something I have not seen mentioned in this topic is M2 NVMe SSDs throttling performance due to generated heat. Unlike older SATA drives NVMe ones tend to get rather toasty when in use and as of such it is often a good idea to pair them with good airflow and a heat sink if you want to keep them performing at expected levels.

Something like the following would be a nice addition:

Wow I didn’t know they got so hot!

Also I picked up a gpu support stand for a few $$. The ftw3 is pretty heavy and long.

Update: going with the EVGA 2080 xc gaming card instead! Idk if I’ll need the stand but I’ll probably use it anyway.

Ok the build is done!

RGB isn’t really my thing haha

The 9900k is massively backordered as is the 9700k. However, incredibly, I found a 9700k locally at micro center! I did some research and the 9700k, already an overkill processor for what I’m doing, is all I need really. The 9900k is overkill for yesterday’s and the foreseeable futures gaming.

I didn’t know exactly how heat pipes in the Noctua cooler worked. Turns out it’s basically a water cooler inside through capillary action. The liquid boils and evaporates then condensed and cools ready for another cycle. I don’t have to worry about water leaks like an AIO cooler. It’s a pretty impressive and massive cooler with temps at 25c idle and 48c loaded.

I did get the 2080 easily. Everything I’ve thrown at it runs effortlessly.

The Asus Z390-e mobo came with 2 m.2 heat sinks so that was good there.

Other than that I’m ready for this system to last another 5+ years! I didn’t even need to upgrade my last system (3770k w/ 670ftw) all this time so here’s hoping the 9700k/2080 lasts as long.

Thanks for all the help!
