I go through the character creation screen, and then the top screen shows my model, and the bottom screen says something in japanese. None of my buttons do anything

Check out http://cheats.gbatemp.net and read the Help file there on how to install cheat files to your flashcard. You can also use AKAIO on your AceKard which has more features and better game compatibility than the AceKard firmwware and also fixes PS0.
