    my dad works for nintendo.
i suppose you want to get them for free? (illegally)
NO CD version is usually a crack that removes the CD check present on games..

steam is a game store.. if you want to buy games\play legally, you may require an account, some games nowadays give you a steam key and you require to use it,
and steam is pretty neat, is a game library with social functions like friends chat, profile, achievements it also got some free games, it has a in-game menu so you can play and chat\internet browsing\listening to music inside the game

however, if you download a game from torrents, you don't need steam.. they usually have the steam checking disabled (because most games downloaded from steam will check if you are using the steam client with a valid account)

edited to give some more info: most games have security like checking if you have the real disk, check if you are using a valid online account (like steam) CD key etc... there are several ways...
if you want to purchase a game, you you can purcahse a digital or a cd copy..
if the game has a steam logo on the box, or the place you purchase it, it usually means it provides you a key for activate on a steam account, once you activate the key, you can put the disc on the garbage can, since you can download the game from steam whenever you want...
if no steam logo is on the box, it means you install the game, probably have a serial, and you need the disc present on the drive for play it...

however, when you download a game, usualy its provided a folder with files to remove security(called crack) usually its a file you have to replace on the folder where the game is installed, that will remove the anti piracy checks... and you can play the games without owning them..
theese "cracks" sometimes are also used by peoeple who bought the games, one of the reasons is, your computer doesn't have a CD\dvd drive and you can't use the disc... or you damaged the disc so badly it doesn't read anymore...

don't understimate the power of a dual core, specially at 3 ghz..
i have a dual core at 1.6ghz (i think i have it for 5 years), and still works just fine

also, games don't benifit from loads of cores...

I know but from the sound of it he's using onboard graphics and has no GPU so AAA titles are out of the question.

    On steam it's something like:

    1) create steam account (only first time required)
    2) log in to steam
    3) browse to games you want to buy (they have about a gazillion games)
    4) click 'buy'.
    5) pay (you can use paypal, creditcard or other options)
    6) download the game (most if not all games download and install at the same time)
    7) click 'play'

Depending on the game, you may want a 360 controller (or a PS3 or 4 one with something like inputmapper). It's never required, though.

The process works sort of the same on Gog.com. They got fewer games, but older ones. And without any antipiracy checks (steam games require you to connect to your steam account, so you can't just install it on the PC's of all your friends. Or more correctly: you CAN, but only one of you can be connected to your account - and your games - at the same time).

I hardly bother with cracked PC games anymore. The sites are often shady, you'll need a decent virus scanner, things won't always work (and usually online is crippled or absent) and the installation procedures...hmm...I admit the few times I've tried it recently things really improved on that front, but some older games (like...the ones who actually still do CD checks) it can really be jumping through hoops.

So games that need steam, must be bought to play?

Well yeah how else would you play games on steam? you could just pirate them through torrents and and the shortcuts to steam but you wont get achievements.

In a way, yes. It's more that steam is a platform to easily buy, download, install and maintain games. You can buy steam games elsewhere (e.g. on sites like humblebundle.com), but in that case you'll get an activation code which you can activate on your profile (or donate it to your friends).
Also: in the end, PC games are still owned by the manufacturer. they can release the games also on other sites (eg. gog.com) or on their own website. It may have a different antipiracy measurement (ubisoft games comes to mind), but in that case, steam isn't needed.

Of course, piracy is a completely different ball game. Perhaps it's better to regard steam as what it is: a DRM method in itself. It's not much more than a library that manages both your personal identity and your game collection. It logs your hours, lets you connect with friends, has achievements, and things like that...but it's not the game in itself. These games can still be cracked (all of them, I guess, though I assume not every one can be found on torrent sites). Then you won't need steam, and perhaps can't even have it running in the background.

I used to understand pirates who were low on cash. But with the huge amount of steam sales and bundles, prices are so low that I've literally spent more money on shoes (2 pairs!) than on games this year (and I didn't exactly held back on gaming purchases). So the money argument kind of falls flat. You can still go with piracy if you really want to...it's just more convenient to actually buy stuff.

Thanks for that so if a game has steam files in the crack folder, it means you have to install steam to play? Could not care about achievements
