So then find an unpatched Switch or a patched Switch with a firmware of 4.1 or lower. The chances of a non-modchip solution for patched units above 7.1 is close to zero and even if one does come out, it may take up to a decade to release.

Its always been like this. If you want to hack the Switch, you're putting yourself at a disadvantage by getting a patched or Mariko unit.

I got my switch for Christmas around 2 years ago. How was I supposed to know it was patched.

If you got a console for free, you shouldn't really be complaining about not being able to hack it. CFW is not a privilege nor a right. If you want to hack something, you have to put the effort in as well as researching your options.
