I have a launch wii and modded it last year. Lately after playing a game for more then an hour it will randomly just shut off and the led will go out. To get it to turn on again i have to unplug it and plug it back in. I think the fan might of failed on it and i was wondering if there is any way to test it.
Also would a usb fan be enough to cool it or if not is there anywhere that i can get a replacement fan?

Not that it'll answer your question, but I would personally get a can of compressed air and go to town on your system. You said you modded it so I assume you've already opened the case, which is probably the best thing in your situation, since just blowing the air into the vent would only push the dust further into your system causing more problems down the line.

If you haven't, you may want to look into figuring out how to open up the Wii's case securely, since if there's a critical error on the system's part, it's certainly not like you can send it to Nintendo and expect them to fix it for you. ;P That said, it would be a good idea to open up the system and try to clean it up with a non-contact method like the compressed air. And at least those are moderately cheap considering the usefulness they have.

I have taken apart the console recently and it is perfectly clean inside. I think I just need to get a replacement fan. Or maybe this might work? http://cgi.ebay.ca/NEW-USB-COOLER-COOLING-...1QQcmdZViewItem

Assuming you modded the Wii yourself, you should be pretty good with soldering, here's a VERY cost effective way of cooling your Wii.

Take a PC fan (if you have one, or buy one on the cheap) and an old USB cable... take the Black and Red wires from the USB and make a solid connection to the Red and Black on the fan wires, and you can mount it nicely on the back of the Wii to help with the cooling.

You can even mod your Wii physically and put it inside the Wii's casing!

That could, yes. Also, consider where you have your system. Is it just out in the open or are you stuffing it into an entertainment center/TV case.

How competent are you with opening the system and everything? Not to really make a veiled insult at your skills, but it's possible you might've done something wrong...that then just comes into play several months later. Yeah.

Make a checklist of everything you've been doing lately since you've modded the system so myself and others can potentially help solve this with you. Definitely need to say how the system is set up and everything at the very least.

I opened up the system and soldered a wiikey myself. It was my first time soldering but i think i did a good job. After that i opened it up to clean the lens so it would read the dl version of brawl better.

Thanks alot I did this and it works great. I just taped the fan to the back of the console and the system is now cool while playing games and has not shutoff on me yet.
