if you run out of space on the micro sd card, does the switch download content to internal memory or do you essentially have to pick one over the other?

Are you talking about tinfoil? You always get the option before you start. If the location you choose doesnt have enough space it will tell you.

no, I mean by default. I only have about 86GBs left. I mean can the system read both storage mediums at the same time. does the system just default to the micro sd card if one is plugged in? what happens when it's full?

when it's full, it's... switching... to internal memory.

You have the option to select which storage device to download applications to. If one is full, select the other one.
