Hi Plailect, turns out my idea was likely founded on incorrect data. Further review suggests extremely low likelihood of useful results pursuing that idea. Maybe the next one....
 
what are the chances of my old 3ds xl to brick no hard mod if i follow this tutorial?
any reports of brick during the process?

Yep. There are quite a few reports of bricks after injecting the downgraded emunand into sysnand.
If you don't have a hardmod you should wait until there's a way to verify its integrity before injecting.

I think verifying if the FIRM0 and FIRM1 partitions have changed is enough but I'm not an expert in this.
The ideal option would probably be a CFW that could load a 2.1 emunand.

How brick-proof is this guide for a N3DS?
I want to try to dump the OTP but I don't have a hardmod, and don't want to risk a brick. :P

Go for it, got the OTP from my second N3DS now no problem - no hardmod available. Do as SomeGamer stated before me and follow the guide without missing any steps. Also, make sure when running the python-script that the bricked emuNAND gets patched correctly, you will see it because the window stays open showing some progress.

So be calm and you'll do fine. From what I know all the bricks happened before the guide was version 2.1.

Other people did the exact steps and got bricks. The downgrade process isn't 100% reliable.
It worked as well without issues for me on the O3DS but bricked a friend's console without any error message during the downgrade.
 
Got it first try everything on my O3DSXL, but this one was the easy, it had everything vallina, fresh formatted sys and emuNAND, now i'm on the restore sysNAND section, and seems it's working flawesly, sooooo...

HELL YEAH!!!!!!!!!!

Now i must compile the armloader thing, and this weekend, try with my O3DS, my Holy Grail...

Which ones, except you? I read through the thread yesterday before attempting myself and all the bricks seemed to happen last week before the guide update. Some people thought they were bricked this week but it was just them not setting arm9loaderhax up correctly.

Also stupid question, but did you follow the correct guide to N3DS and patch the bricked emuNAND before flashing it? From my experience the downgrade either works or it will tell you it didn't, that's why I'm a bit skeptic the downgrade is to blame. Sorry about friend's console too.
 
Do you guys know if I will have problems doing this if my emuNAND is on 10.6 instead of 10.5? o.O I've seen there's no NATIVE_FIRM change or anything so I guess I am okay?
 
So another stupid n00b question... I need to "reinstall CIA Manager" in this case FBI... so do I need to enter formatted emuNAND, then HBL... then run Pasta then enter HLB AGAIN and install FBI from there right?
 
Getting OTP.bin on O3DS is damned easy and trouble free
Getting OTP.bin on N3DS is also damned easy till the point you flash your fixed bricked emunand 2.1 to sysnand and reboot :p that's the point where
your sweat will break out untill you actually see it booting into your homescreen :p
(If it stays on 2 black screens, start to panic)

Nothing a good ol' hardmod can't solve... Implying you have a Sysnand backup from 9.2 xD

So to start from this guide I need linked SYSNAND & EMUNAND correct (like start fromscratch)?

Also, what do these two steps even mean? (Sound like step 12 should be step 11?
