I can't play the original NES versions. I own the SNES game Super Mario All-Stars and it just looks so much better.

Don't fucking kid yourself. They didn't recreate shit for any nostalgic feel. If they did they would have an option to turn it on and off as MY tv didn't have the garbled shit on the sides. It is just another prime example of Nintendo saying, "recode and optimize our code? fuck you and just give us your money you dumb fanboy." And of course with my shit grin smile I just nod and say okay. Out of the 30+ VC games I bought SMB3 is the only one I regret so far except for a few TG16 gambles.

How about this for an explanation...

Your TV no matter what decade, using a real NES playing the REAL SMB3, didn't show the edges of the screen, you will also see down the left a whole missing line. Now that your playing it emulated, the Wii has made the emulated screen fit on your tv a different way, so you can now see the edges, no doubt more of the top and bottom to.
As for Nintendo not optimising their code Why would they? remember this game had to run on the original hardware, looking at the game, it seems to squeeze quite a bit out of that poor machine, probably more than was intended of it. If you are not happy, don't play it.

Any NES game with a mapper is already doing more than the system was designed for, right?

I think so, yes.

But what I meant was, the game was not designed to be played on tv's that would show the edges of the screen. So a litle bit of junk in a place not meant to be viewed is perfectly normal and is how the game was intended to be, it has nothing to do with un optimized or messy coding.

I'd love to "not play it" had they told me it looked like shit before I PAID for it. Again my real copy didn't look like this on my TV so I wasn't prepared for it to look like garbage when I made my PURCHASE. Now that I made my PURCHASE I think I have every right to bitch. They warn you about all kids of other things like "2 player mode doesn't work" "rumble doesn't work" why not have a disclaimer saying, the game looks like shit compared to the copy you played a decade ago.

I guess.

One thing coded truly horribly were the international releases of Pokemon Red and Pokemon Blue. They took up double the ROM space from their Japanese original for no clear reason, and had more bugs in addition to those already present.

What I (and others) are trying to say, is that it is EXACTLY THE SAME as it was a decade ago, It's TV's that hav changed. Why would Nintnendo warn you about it? "Warning, This IS the same game you played ten years ago, warts & all"!

Besides, surely this is not the first game youve ever bought that your not happy with? This game is nearly 20 years old, did you expect it to look excellent?

Okay but now we're only discussing SMB3. But I think it's really fucked up that a golden classic like Super Mario Bros has double speed music. Normally I would say, it's all about the gameplay, but my God, who doesn't know every pixel and every note in that game? This would have to be a perfect replica. But now it feels like shoddy emulated crap.

Do you guys seriously not know the pallet issue / screen limitation with Super Mario Bros 3? Instead of programming an NES game all over again or hacking an emulator. Instead fixing it, it would be easier to just bring over the all-stars version.

Which would make a lot more sense to bring over the all-stars version. That'd be worth closer to five bucks.

Because People want the NES version, the SNES (Allstars) version was poorly upgraded. I for one did not like it. Besides SNES games on VC are more expensive than $five.

Hmm yeah I have to agree actually.
The GBA port was great but that's a whole new can of worms.

Yes, SMB3 ALWAYS had that garbage. If you still refuse to believe this run an experiment : connect your NES to a LCD/Plasma TV (even with composite cables), and lo behold are the lines! When you played this on a CRT TV those werent visible because CRT tubes dont show all of the screen. Just like when you used to have a CRT monitor and had to adjust the geomentry, except you don't adjust the geometry - the ppl that make tv account for that "dead space" when making tv shows. There's something called a Safe Zone which everyone assumes will always be visible.

You could always run it via an emulator. You have paid for the right to use the ROM so there shouldn't be any legality issues there....

VC IS and emulator!

and actually, unless you backed up the game yourself using your own hardware, or own the copyright, then you are not legally allowed to have it, no matter how many copies of the game you have bought.
