Hacking Old, bricked wii. Can it be saved?

I have a Wii I bricked a while back. I was trying to install an older system menu and now all I get is a black screen. (yes, I now realize how absolutely stupid that is. I had no idea what I was doing back then.)

There is a lot of sentimental value with this wii, I saved up my money when I first read about the Nintendo "revolution" in Nintendo Power. I honestly don't care about any of the data from the wii being saved, I just want it functional again.

Is there a service that can fix this? I saw something on this thread that a user named Deadlyfoez fixes these for a fee.

Is there someway this can be fixed? How can I do this myself? If someone does this for money, that means that there has to be a tutorial on how to, somewhere.

Flashing NAND actually sounds like fun, so I want out figure out how to do it myself, but first I want to know if this can actually bring my old system back from the dead, before I attempt something complex.

Not if the wii was bought before ~mid-2009
A bricked CPU-01 wii can "easily" be fixed (for an electronician), even a full brick. With an infectus and some time, you can do everything you want, like reinjecting a bootmii boot2 dump (on a compatible wii, of course ) then using cboot2 to reinstall a proper System Menu (with its IOS). You can also dump the bad NAND with its keys (thanks bootmii), and have some fun with ohneswanzenegger to build a new NAND from scratch. I've repaired at least 15 wii (CPU-01) motherboards with my infectus !


and if it's only a bad downgrade DelRio1991, you can already try to boot in recovery mode (savemiifree : with a Gamecube guenuine disassembled controller on the 4th port, hold Up/Down/Left/Right and power on the wii). If it works, you will see on-screen the version of the wii, you can try to insert any game that have an update > your bricked System Menu. With some luck, it's gonna install the update...IT WILL NOT TELLING YOU THAT IT'S UPGRADING, so let the game for 5 minutes before trying to reboot.

I tried the gamecube controller method, already. I actually took apart a crappy controller to do so, but tht didn't work.

So, you're saying, if I know what I'm doing, I can use this to fix it?

Honestly, this old thing is taking up space in my closet and I would like to actually do something with this old system that isn't a paperweight.

if this is actually a CPU-01 board, then YES, you can fix it

check the diagrams below. You will have to reinject a proper boot2 dump (with bootmii installed on it of course) from offset $0 to $7 of the NAND chip.

You can extract this from any full bootmii dump of any wii ($0 to $107FFF)

tell the software to only burn NAND from offset $0 to $7

I don't have any backups for the .nand, though, will this still work?

you only need any DONOR NAND, for the boot2 part (with bootmii in it)

I've seen em at pawn shops and thrift stores for $20-50, don't work too hard on this one.

Well, they are dirt cheap now. However, as OP has stated -- it has sentimental value. He doesn't have much to lose when trying to fix it.

Don't expect too much help from nintendo, if they look at it then they will see that it was softmodded and more than likely refuse to fix it. If they do offer to fix it they will probably charge an ungodly amount of money. Like posted above, they are cheap on craigslist and at pawn shops right about now.
