I had someone give me a few OG xbox consoles. One of them I believe to have a bad hdd, and im curious if there is a way to swap it out without having it modded. If there is no way to fix it without modding, are there any recommendations for a chip? It is a 1.6 also.

It's best to have a chip installed, aim for an OpenXenium or Aladdin XT. You can then FTP the contents of your hard disk over to a folder on your PC as a backup.

The point is, is that all HDDs are locked to a key on the Xbox's EEPROM.

Use something like an Arduino or Raspberry Pi Pico to dump the EEPROM.

From there you can recover the HDD key and create a new hard drive without modding.

But as someone else already said, best to have a modchip installed, especially since you have a 1.6 console. No hardmod TSOP flashing.

I do not recommend buying nor installing an Aladdin XT chip, since most times you cannot flash the memory chip due to the manufacturers using the wrong chip (they're different chips that are resurfaced and relabeled as genuine). If you seriously want to gamble and go down this route, consider getting a programmer / flasher like the XGecu T48 or XGecu T56 (both of which are more expensive than just getting an OpenXenium).

Ill definitely look into using a pico. I have a spare in my parts box already, so that would be great.
