yeah im not awesome enough to make an obscure game essential list but what obscure games have you played?

oh by obscure i mean different or weird from the usual game and if the game has a similarity to a normal game tell what game it is similar to.

me

bunny must die/ chelsea and the seven devils(metoidesque)

touhou project 1-12(bullet hell)

Megamari(mega man 2)

Super Marisa World(super mario world)

touhouvania(castlevania)

spelunky

New Super Marisa Land (super mario land)

Super Marisa Land

Almost everything you posted is a hack of another game, so this seems more like a list of hacks we've played than of obscure games.

Noah's Ark (NES) - WAAY better than the angry nerd described it, it's literally mario meets megaman as you can stomp on your enemies like goombas AND you can shoot at them like megaman. One of konami's finest. PAL (europe) only.

Gekobo (PCE) and Gekibo 2 (PS2) - The most underrated series of all time IMO. You take weird pictures to earn points - MUCH more fun than it sounds.

thatd be touhoumon

also no they aint hacks they are games made by the group of people who made the touhou fighting games(which were made by a few of the people who made the touhou project games).

and my definition of obscure is downright strange compared to the average game

Gekibo certainly fits that.

Characters in the game(s) you take pictures of include a male homosexual flasher street bum wearing heavy makeup and lipstick (recurring), Quite possibly the strangest african american stereotypes ever concieved, michael jackson, spiderman and king kong.

As for the game itself, think 2D pokemon snap with platforming and all the japan-ness that emenates from katamari damacy times a million, especially for the second game. The first is mostly filled with 90s american pop culture.

Actually New Super Marisa land and Super Marisa Land are definitely hacks.

If they aren't hacks (or modifications, which is a kind of hack), then that means they're just constructed from the ground up and accidentally have the same name. I don't know these games, but unless it borrows just the concept and the name, it's a hack.

For my own contribution: Logic pro (video demo). An arcade game that follows the same idea as nonograms (think mario piicross), but adds a crazy time limit. The strangest thing was the story...it had something to do with a monkey that wanted to be popular. Don't ask me how that relates back to puzzles, but...yeah.

Another gem was penguin brothers. It's a platform game of a penguin throwing bombs. It had a gameplay (and the cuteness factor) like bubble bobble, so unless you want to count the end boss (a giant...pig?), it may not really be obscure.

And I know the game has its franchise of his own, but still: those wario ware games. I mean...WTF? 5 second games?

I can't forget about UT2004's bombing run either. UT2004 is (as you may know) a standard FPS, and the 'bombing run' is probably better known as 'single flag capture the flag'. The result is in theory not that different than an American football match without referees (get the ball and try not to die while making your way to the enemy goal). In practice, however, UT2004 had a device (translocator) that you could throw away and immediately transport to in order to make more speed. Combined with the already very bouncy movement options of that game (if you never played it: UT players are always bouncing around everywhere) and a quick pass-to-teammate option if you had the ball made this game something beyond insanity. Being able to survive with the ball for longer than a few seconds is pretty 'standard'. It was that translocator that upped the pace, especially since it allowed much faster movement than those with the ball or with weapons.
Unfortunately, the learning curve was very steep and bots were simply bad at the game. Take into account that not knowing how to play well often ended up with your own team losing (and yourself usually dying because you just go for the ball) and that UT2004 had other selling points, and you'll understand that the gametype was never really that popular.
...but damn, once you knew how to play it was fuuuuuun!

*is nostalgic now*

Nothing Touhou is obscure...it has a pretty huge fanbase last time I checked.
Though I LOVE all of the games related to it.

By the way, obscure has a lot of different branches to its definition. I'm pretty sure quite a few people will come here with the mindset obscure means "not famous or acclaimed". Which is how I take the word.

Also on that note, I think pretty much every single visual novel is obscure. They don't have huge fanbases, and yes they're technically games. It's tragic more English speaking people don't like 'em.

INB4CHEETAHMEN2

Seriously though, Action 52 and Cheetahmen 2 are at the top of my list.

And to be COMPLETELY fair, Super Mario Bros is PRETTY fucking strange too.

Beat Em' & Eat Em' is another (NSFW) BIZARRE game, but so are ANY of the Atari Porn games.

How about C5 Clive on the Spectrum? Or Mercenary on the Amiga? Or Moley Christmas, on the Crash Chrimbo covertape, various "Black" PCB's of Cave shmups, Street Fighter II Black Belt Edition bootleg arcade pcb, obscure enough?
