Since I bought and hacked new 2DS XL about a year back, I had no real use for my hacked old 3DS and gave it to a friend. Apparently, he formatted the 3DS and then wiped the SD card. It is currently on 11.9 and is on Luma3DS 7.1. It doesn't seem to be able to run payloads when I boot up while holding Start and I haven't been able to find a way to run Homebrew on it and we can't update Luma.

We have absolutely no idea what to do at this point and are welcome to any suggestions.

If 7.1 is not a typo, this sounds like you have an early B9S version (1.0). This will not boot later Luma versions than v7.1. Update B9S first and it should accept Luma v9.1 (and Luma will load the payloads on SD:/luma/payloads)

Thanks for the reply. However, as I stated before, holding Start while booting doesn't bring up the chainloader and I can't get past step one.

Sorry. My fault. Put SafeB9SInstaller.firm renamed as boot.firm to the root of your SD.

When starting the console the installer should start - without any button. Note that this will be an endless loop: every single time you turn it on, the installer starts from the beginning.
After completing the installer once, replace it with boot.firm (Luma v9.1)

(The guide assumes you are successfully booting Luma from SD which does not seem to be the case.)
