Homebrew Noob Request

I currently have the New 3DS XL updated to the most current firmware (11.9.0-42U I believe). I currently use OoT to access Homebrew and realize that this method is very restricting. I want to be able to use BootNTR and access Homebrew from the main menu. I hear CFW allows this.

With CFW, are games still updated through the e-shop and how is the DS then updated?
How can I go from where I am at now to being able to use BootNTR to use codes and access Homebrew from the main menu?

I only really want to be able to do the above, so if there is a good, simple and safer method allowing this, I will take that over a method that gives more.

EDIT: If there is a non-CFW method (to keep the DS safer from getting banned online), I would prefer it.

All Stock Functions work normal with CFW.

Follow 3DS.hacks.guide (link goes to the Seedminer page to make it a bit simpler, when you get to the bottom choose Frogtool but completely skip all steps on the Getting Steelhax part since you have OOThax)

There's pretty much no ban risk unless you cheat in online multiplayer or pirate games before they come out.

is this safe to use, like give myself master balls, or put a charizard in my team, and still go online with that save?

Putting in a charizard with reasonable stats should be fine, but I wouldn't cheat in a bunch of master balls.
