ROM Hack noob asking questions

Hi im sandy and im in college to be a game designer and programer *more for art less for prog but learning it anyway like a good gamer should*
Anyway though i am in it for that i still want to pick up some extra things
a friend had a game that soemone had hacked *pokemon* and changed the little pokemon into little chibi anime characters....FUN
anyway i would like to learn similar...how to i guess exchange my sprites for their sprites...
i tried youtube and reading the boards and aeverything but im so confused!!
i dont know what all i need to start!
i read somthing like an emulater might be needed..fine..where is a good one.. i know it for playing the game on the computer right?
i downloaded poketex .. not sure why but it seem what the other people wanted
and i guess i need soemthing called crystaline ...
So if someone could give me a list of things i would need to rip and exchange my sprites for the ds pokemon game * i already have the rom i was playing it on my R4d*
and maybe a small explination of what they do and why or something
OR a site that tells you all that info in nice clear instructions i would love it
pictures to work with would be even better!!
but im not picky ill be happy to try and figure it out from there

so far speak pretty dang good chinese and am learning japanese on my own...german is next year.

Hi there, you would need:
crystaltile2
hex editor
the pokemon rom
dslazy or dsbuff

that should be enouht to get startet. on romhackers.net or a lot of useful tutorials.
Youre leraning quite lot languages there, german would be the easiest of these.

wow thanks! couple follow up questions..is crystiline only avilble in chinese? not too big a prob for me with 1 year under my belt i can mange but lol i like it ot be easy!!!
and...hex editor...should i get the first one google gives me the microsoft one or the neo one? or does it not matter lol

i don't know if crystaltile is aviable in another language.
for the hex editor you can use anyone you want, but for tables and to display sjis i say windhex is a good one.

ok yay i got this all...little trouble figuring out how to make the crytilzine thingy work...im not sure how it should be opend or anything..does it just need to be on the computer??

:sighs:; im stuck!!! i got all these progs..and..well dang if i cant get any further...i unpacked the ds rom...and see narc files..i dont know how to use them??? how do i change the files ???do i need to make my sprite first..or should i edit the sprite they have! oy and that evil little TLP doesnt help either like the one person on another board suggested..what do i use to view the narc files? thank you againfor all your help

You'll probably need to decompress them. normally, Nintenlords' tool would be good, but i hear pokemon has some weird thing that needs something special to decompress them. look around the boards, i'm sure there's a tool there.
