No controllers working for NES Classic Mini

so today after my third time flashing the memory with some new games using hackchi,
i plugged it to the tv with a classic controller and it just doesnt work. can't get the menu to move.
i thought the controller died, so ok, but now the ORIGINAL NES Classic controller doesnt work.
Nothing does! wtf?
no port 1 and 2.
what did i do wrong?

Just to clarify, when you are stating it does not work is this within RetroArch or is this outside of it; in the main NESC Menu?
Have you tried flashing the original kernel to confirm the controllers work?
