We're talking about a program that is able to run gamecube isos, that most obtain through illegal means anyway, on modified hardware . Is it really a legal issue to allow user applied backgrounds?

I didn't say it was illegal to allow custom backgrounds. I said it was illegal for us (the Nintendont team) to use it as the official background. Nintendont itself is in a gray area, but branding it with a copyrighted logo is a black and white issue.

If I had a problem with custom backgrounds I wouldn't have written most of the code for it.

It's crazy how a simple stylish loading screen makes everything so much more seamless. It's more appealing to stare at than a verbose screen.

The main purpose of writing the new code is make it easy for both testers/coders and users to change backgrounds without the need to compile every time. Also to keep everything running as usual in case we don't use the custom backgrounds.
Implementing this in the official loader, adding gif support or audio support is totally up to the team of devs not me,
it's best to PM the devs and convince them why a new feature should work better and whether it should affect the overall stability or not. You can even give them some donation if you need it badly.
As for legal issues and piracy BS please don't discuss it in in this thread. Instead share you beautiful background here with everybody else especially they can now be readily used with the new modded dol.

drakorex, For the suggested bar, I'll try the filter stuff again, but my initial tests were not promising.

naxil I'll test it from hbc again and see what you mean

So can we currently just plop a jpeg into the Nintendont folder and have the mod load it as a background, or is there more to it? I read through the OP and didn't find how to do it rather than compiling it myself, which I am not set up to do. Eager to give this a try.

Did a bit of editing to make it work with the loading bar. It's good enough. Still think it'd be cooler than shit to have the GAMECUBE lettering fill up as it loads though. :D

could possibly be coded as when certain things progress a certain amount of letters are loaded.
