Legendary games designer Shigeru Miyamoto has recently had the opportunity to sit down with revered gaming publication Edge to discuss the possible future of Nintendo online services.

In the intriguing interview Shigeru Miyamoto states that Nintendo haven’t quite decided whether or not gamers should be provided with a free online gaming service similar to Wii, or whether the company should introduce a paid subscription based online model like Microsoft’s Xbox Live.

“… Probably the other thing that we are desperate to realise is the core [online] business structure,” Nintendo’s Entertainment Analysis and Development boss told us. “Do we need to demand customers pay monthly fees to enjoy online activities? Or give an online subscription that is free of charge, but then offer something extra for people that pay, so that they get some extra value? With these core business strategies I think we are less active than we should be.”

- Shigeru Miyamoto, speaking to Edge magazine

Oh noes!!! i really don't want this to happen

Now, if they do decide to do this, they better give us less lag, better structure, NO FUCKING FRIENDCODES!! and more integration (Twitter or Facebook anyone?)

If they won't, nobody will pay for it. If the new online experience is like XBoxLive I don't mind paying a few bucks for it.

The online Nintendo gives us right now is not worth paying money for, for the same reasons iFish said above.

Now if a paid online service offered better services, you know, like moderation and didn't have FRIEND COOOODES...

I think the problem everyone has with the online-expirience Nintendo provides at the moment has nothing to do with money. It is Nintendos mentality...

Personally I don`t see a need for changing the whole online-structure (even though I think it would be a good idea to make one friendcode per system) but that`s just me, because I tend to either play solo or with friends locally. But I see the needs for this...

Skip the damn friend code system, and make some kind of Nintendo account or something that is tied to the Wii Store and DSi / 3DS.
Also would be sweet if they redesigned the UI so that you had the option of White and Black, to go nicely with the console colors. xD

and stop all the cheaters and hackers online.

Well first of all they need to get rid of the crappy Friend code system, but even if they do it's still not worth paying. What i think would be a fair deal is if everybody had access to free online but paying gives you extra features, although I don't completely like the idea I'd rather have that then have it like X-box Live. But either way if sony aren't making people pay I doubt nintendo will start.

I agree with this.

Basically what they need to do is get rid of Friend Codes and replace them with Nintendo IDs that can be used on 3DS, Wii2 and possibly Wii (I'm expecting this for next gen, nothing too drastic is gonna happen soon). Then people can play with their friends and people in communities like this. That should be free.

For paid stuff - play with anyone, dedicated servers, a more Xbox Live vibe to it all. But it wouldn't be too expensive.

It's not like Nintendo offers good online services at that, and I doubt it'll be anything close to Xbox Live (which is still kinda stupid to pay for). This just a ripoff. Paying for online on consoles is phasing out. It'd just booster Sony's sales.

what is the big deal about friend codes, the games that even use them only require you to enter the code one single time for that game, and they are only used if you are trying to play with a specific individual, I mean how many friendcodes are you guys actually using

I'd rather have friend codes than some stupid moniker

You don't have many friends do you?

What are you guys talking about?? Friend codes were the best thing that came from Nintendo. They were simple to use and they gave me and my friends that sense of friendship! Like seriously, why do we need to change? And why does everyone complain about the lag? It's good for the soul!
