Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 firmware updated to version 20.5.0

There's a new system software update available for both the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. Firmware version 20.5.0 is available to download. The patch notes merely specify stability, but a placeholder update page is available on Switchbrew once users have had time to datamine the update's contents.

Sad that Nintendo feels obligated to release updates simultaneously for Switch 2 and Switch. I was kind of hoping updates for the OG Switch would gradually slow down and eventually come to a halt.

Look at the latest video games chart in Japan:

  1. [SW2] Mario Kart World (Nintendo, 06/05/25) – 33,861 (1,766,296)
  2. [PS5] Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter (Nihon Falcom, 09/19/25) – 21,511 (New)
  3. [NSW] Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter (Nihon Falcom, 09/19/25) – 21,453 (New)
  4. [SW2] Donkey Kong Bananza (Nintendo, 07/17/25) – 11,300 (318,441)
  5. [NSW] Castlevania Dominus Collection (SUPERDELUXE GAMES, 09/18/25) – 9,503 (New)
  6. [NSW] Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Hinokami Chronicles 2 (Aniplex, 08/01/25) – 7,170 (123,697)
  7. [NSW] Story of Seasons: Grand Bazaar (Marvelous, 08/27/25) – 6,059 (74,697)
  8. [NSW] Minecraft (Microsoft, 06/21/18) – 5,762 (4,007,619)
  9. [NSW] Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Nintendo, 04/28/17) – 5,203 (6,445,312)

7 out of 10 are Switch 1 games, there's only two Switch 2 games.

The original Switch is still Nintendo's cash cow right now.

Each update is another chance to patch a security vulnerability that may enable homebrew
That hardly matters anymore anyways, since hackers report the bugs and exploits to Nintendo for a payout so Nintendo can patch them before being released to the public. Bunch of sellout shill assholes anymore.

Remember when hackers were dope, and just released exploits out the ass, like back in the PSP and Wii hacking days? Those were good times. Now they just Cuck for the bad guys.

They haven't being lying about stability, tbh. Granted, they were the ones who introduced it in the first place but my Switch lasts much longer in sleep now.

Im definitely not calling Nintendo good, but I think there’s a lot more to it than that, Dark_AleX eventually saw how menacing Sony was being with PS3 hackers, I think it’s a heck of a lot easier now to track people down and companies will do it.

Does it stink exploits are being disclosed to the companies first, it does, but that doesn’t always mean we never hear about them later and now no one is ending up Bowsered.

Somewhat of a shift as well in who is finding the exploits, some of these people today are professional security researchers, and an official bounty is in alignment with code of conduct for their roles.

Does it stink, 100%, but I encourage everyone to get out there and learn! Maybe someone new could find the next exploit!

There are over 153 million Switch sold, that's the majority of user base that's buying those original Switch games. Backward compatibility of the Switch 2 is actually making things worse for Nintendo as the users are buying old Switch games and not expensive Switch 2 games.

Nintendo is deferring many Switch 2 exclusive games until next year, hoping that the Xmas season will ramp up the sales of Switch 2. There's a reason why Bowser stepped down, behind the courteous facade - there's probably heated quarrel behind the scene.

To be fair, it's impossible to know how many of those 150M are still in active use. Plus, backwards compatibility at launch is essential these days with there being so few new games ready.

The original Switch has no compatibility with Wii U, it has even fewer games at launch.

I just 'treated' my Switch Lite to this update. It thanked me. This saves me from buying a Christmas gift for it, so it's a win-win.

The Wii U wasn't a success and they re-released the games for Switch instead since there weren't all that many to begin with.
My point is: There's no backwards compatibility and less launch games yet Switch was still a success at launch. While Switch 2 sold a great number of units but people are buying old games.

Console is a software business, they don't make much money from selling hardware. Even 3rd party sales benefit Nintendo as they get 30% from the sales. None of the 3rd party Switch 2 games are even in the top 10 chart.
