I hope normal DS-games won't be region locked on the DSi, because that would mean I can't play quite a few of my original games!
DS games AREN'T region locked so how'd they lock US games?
Well, American games are not the same as Japanese games and European games, right? I guess it would be possible to disable US-games from booting on a Japanese or European console.

If it's not possible, just ignore my comment

Even if I'm not right, aren't carts region free?

Either way there are different version of each game for Europe and the US, even if there aren't any other changes. So there is a difference between a US and EU dump. I think it would be possible for Nintendo to region lock the DSi. Then again, the probably don't have a reason to.

No, I'm talking about Flash Carts.

Oh, I'm sorry. Flash carts are not region locked. In some cases the software running on it is locked, but that's a completely different story. Sorry for the confusion.

That was the first thing I asked myself.
If I buy it on launch I will be stuck with japanese games only?

That's why I'm not buying it. I want a few things as it is and this will put a dent in it if I buy it.

I hope that by AAC they mean HE-AAC, that would be nice... for non-audiophiles a 32~48kbps he-aac file is pretty much like a 100+kbps mp3. Thats roughly 400 songs in less than 512Mb.

But wikipedia says the Wii supports just regular aac files so i guess that's that.. =\

Damn you Nintendo. When their system's features support and quality is questionable they just hide themselves with a "we're not competing with media players" argument.

Nintendo just don't deserve my monies for the Nintendo DSi if this is their attitude! Then again, region locking the DSi theoretically will help our economy. (I'm using my newfound economics knowledge here, as I'm doing it for A Level).

Because then people will be forced to buy from domestic buyers?
Hardly. How many people import their DSes?

no, no it won't, because most of the money goes to nintendo, which is a japanese company

reigon locking will probably just mean in this case that the online store will be set to whatever reigion firmware it is loaded with... nintendo are smart enough to not give a damn about the 0.01% of users that import games, because they know most of their customers are too lazy/impatient to do that.

as for the audio format, well, as much as i applaud nintendo for sticking two fingers up at MP3 and refusing to pay to use their encumbered crappy format, I do hope that they support OGG and FLAC.

Who cares if its region locked. We are all gonna hack the thing apart anyway.
Especially with an SD card slot.
Not to mention AAC format is bunk.
Easy conversion yes, but really, whats wrong with MP3 and OGG anyway?

Though that problem is easily fixed with todays homebrew.

I do hope they will find a way to get old GBA carts working on it.
Though a wireless attachment with a battery pack would just be odd.
Also most likely not do able.

Just dont wanna give up GBA cart slot for a dumb camera.
The SD card slot though, oh thats gonna be fun.

We'll find a way to unlock the region lock. Though I'd think Nintendo wouldn't bother going that far into it since they never did with the others and its a pointless waste of cash anyway.

Still, nothing a little hacking can't solve.

Nintendo's decades-long streak of region-free handhelds is coming to a close. In a statement to CVG, the company confirmed that Nintendo DSi-only cartridges and downloadable content will be locked to the region where you buy the Nintendo DSi. Web browsing, photo sharing and playing DS games will be region free, but US gamers hoping to import the console between now and "well into 2009" will probably have to brush up on their Japanese to enjoy the best new features.

DSi-only software is region locked

Lets get things straight.

The only DSi software will be the downloadable ones, they are region locked.

Regular retail games won't be region locked.
