is not64 and Nintendo 64 emulation in general really this bad on the wii? I mean, I never tried this emulator before because the graphics in N64 games didn't age well at all, but yesterday I wanted to play some 2D N64 games and downloaded the latest version of not64 from here https://github.com/extremscorner/not64/releases but none of them work.

I mean come on, even 2D games don't work? I tried Yoshi's Story and NBA Hangtime to test it and both of the games don't work.

Maybe there's some unofficial update that makes things a little better or something?

N64 emulation on iPhone, and Android, is great. Don't really need Wii anymore for that.

Yoshi's Story - black background

Yoshi's Story is a lost cause, on Not64 (glN64 GFX) it has broken everything, on Wii64 Rice (Rice GFX) levels can be seen but eggs, enemies and other things aren't displayed correctly, so unplayable on emulators.
You better stick on playing the official Nintendo VC release of Yoshi's Story on N64 VC on Wii.

I wouldn’t say great. I tried conkers bad fur day recently on my iPad and it was missing tons of textures and ran pretty slow

Virtual Console injects are still good to use and Not64 is used by many people since not everyone owns the system, or they like it more then VC

Most of the N64 games worth playing will run without any issues on the Wii. Not64 was updated recently as well as Patcher64Plus. There are several options:

Virtual Console
Rom Injection
Single Rom Loader
Not64/Wii64

Check the compatibility list first, then you are set .

I would kind of put 1 and 2 together, then 3 and 4 together.

Probably the best way to play Nintendo 64 games on Wii is through the virtual console. Those seem to run ok by wii standards. With patcher 64+, along with other tools like friishproduce, you can inject different N64 ROMs into the WADs and play them that way. Though compatibility is low, so that won't always work.

The next way would be Not64 or Wii64 Rice emulator. In some cases, these emulators can run games at or close to regular speed. A single rom loader is a way to run an N64 game from the Wii home menu and start it in either one of these emulators, so you don't have to open the emulator itself then select your game.

Unfortunately, some N64 games simply don't work at all, in the emulators or wii virtual console injection. For that, consider Wii U injection, or emulation on another device.

Edit: no frame skip available currently on N64 emulation.

20 years old hardware building on a codebase that's also almost as old.

EDIT: Actually the Wii hardware is even older than 20 years if we remember it's just a slightly overclocked Gamecube with additional components added. Hardware that was effectively finalized in the year 1999.
