You won't have a "private" folder on your SD card yet, and if you don't go online with Brawl you won't have any of those downloadable custom stages. Other than that it sounds right.
So basically I just need to go online first and put the SD card in my Wii first? Or can I just start off offline with no maps and tell SSBB not to get any?

Also, now that we have that established, I have some additional questions I hope someone can answer:
-What do I do if Nintendo releases a new firmware upgrade later on?
-Can I play backup games online? If I do, will Nintendo detect me and shut me down?
-What do I do in the event of total bricking? How do I use the NAND to restore things?
-Can I safely add more custom stages to SSBB after all of this is done?
-I noticed on the troubleshooting section on the wiibrew page, #2 read "You need to set the archive bit of the private\wii\title\aktn\content.bin." What do they mean by "set"? What do they mean by "archive"? And what do I set it to? I don't have that file in my copy of Smash Stack.
-Which programs should I install to load backups off of a USB drive, run PSX games, and load Homebrew games and programs?
-I noticed there were other folders and files in the Hackmii Installer zip. Do I need to use any of those or can I just put in the boot.elf and nothing else?

Again, any and all help is appreciated.

- Don't update. You can install Priiloader to block any online updates and disc updates. When Nintendo sends you that notification, decline it.
- Yes, you can play backups online, and there is no way Nintendo can detect it, thanks to the way Wii's online system works. The only way they can find you is if you use Ocarina codes/hacks online, but that'll only cause you to be banned for that certain game's save file.
- Install BootMii, and make that NAND backup. Since you're on a new Wii, you won't be able to install BootMii at boot2, so alternatively, install Priiloader. This app has some brick prevention functions, and allows you to bypass the System Menu in the case of brick, and boot directly into the Homebrew Channel. From here, you can use various apps to unbrick your Wii, including booting into BootMii IOS.
- Yes, you can. Just remove Smash Stack after the hacking and you're good to go.
- It should work fine without it, if it doesn't work then come back and ask again.
- The Homebrew Channel runs all Homebrew games and programs. PSX emulation, I believe, is still under development, but check the Homebrew section on the forums for more info on that. As for USB loading, I personally recommend using either Configurable USB Loader or WiiFlow, both are excellent loaders, and can be found in the Backup Loaders sub-forum.
- Add them all in.

Thanks. But now I has more questions.

-Will declining updates prevent me from accessing anything in the future? And will I really be able to simply decline it the first time I go online?

-At what point should I install Priiloader in relation to the step index I wrote up? Where should I cram that in?

-The zip contains boot.elf, bootmini.elf, and a folder that reads "wiiload" and contains three more folders and another zip: "lin32", "osx", win32", and "wiiload.tar.gz". Are you absolutely sure I should include this folder? Because it looks like something computer-related instead. And what about that "bootmini.elf"?

Thanks again.

Declining the update may result in a loss of access to certain Nintendo services, like the Shop Channel, or an update to the IOS. However, the prevention can easily be bypassed. The community usually finds out about what exactly was in the update, and finds its ways around to obtain these things included in the update, without the removal of their Homebrew. Whenever an update occurs, there will be a thread concerning the update with the latest news on the situation. The Shop Channel's latest versions can be installed by downloading them using ModMii and installing them on the Wii as well, so there is usually not actual need to update your Wii.

Just install it at the end of the tutorial, where you're free to install any homebrew you wish. I highly recommend you install it sooner than later, after you modify your Wii.

I'm not sure, but even if they are computer-related, the Wii won't be able to read them, so it'll just skip right over. Once you finish hacking, all of the files can be removed.

What should I do if my Wii gets bricked right after I mod it but before I install Priiloader?

I guess I wasn't clear, but I was saying DON'T go online and you won't have to wait 24 hours for those stages to be deleted.

You can add custom stages when you're done but the in-game custom stages suck. However, the Brawl hacking community is very large and you can get far better custom stages with a little research.

MOAR QUESTIONS DAG NABBIT.

After talking to a couple friends, they told me that some people's Wii consoles have been banned from online. We were chatting about Monster Hunter Tri. Can I get banned from Monster Hunter Tri by using a backup of it? Or does banning only happen if I cheat?

Anyone that has ever gotten banned from a server used cheats, simple as that.

If your curious it is possible to un-ban yourself, but that's a discussion for another time.

Hello. This seems like a semi active thread so I wanted to ask a few questions. First, I've modded a wii before, mine was 4.1
biggrin.gif
So I'm comfortable and semi know what I'm doing. I followed a softmod guide so I could learn what to do and why I was doing it. Anyway on to my questions. Someone wanted me to mod a red wii, as a christmas present. So I told them shouldn't be too hard. After some reading I learned I couldn't bannerbomb it. So I attempted the smash stack.. this is where my problem is. Once going into the stage builder (after removeing all the preloaded stages) the wii just locks up. It doesn't begin loading Bootmii or anything. I can't find a lot of information on the red wii other than the obvious, D3-2 drive, 4.3U firmware. I'll list my steps so that hopefully someone can find where I'm going wrong.

(wifi is turned off. Wii has never been used so totally virgin wii)

- power on wii with blank formatted 2GB SD card in.
- insert Smash bros.
-go to stage builder
- delete preloaded stages
- power off wii
- remove SD card insert into computer
- load hackmii into folder and the boot.elf into root of card (using hackmii .8? I believe bc it's the only one that works for 4.3)
- remove card and inset it into wii
- power on wii and start brawl
- go to vault and stage builder
- wii freezes here. I can hold down the power button and it will turn off but it doesn't load the hack

Suggestions? questions? any help would be good.

*** Ok update. I don't know what happened but after leaving it alone for 3 days it seems to have worked now. Weird. Solved****

I didn't end up getting the Wii. But I might be getting one tomorrow. So now I'm back to this.

Now are you guys ABSOLUTELY SURE that ANY Wii can be modded? Even the newest ones? Even the Red ones? Do I need a special version of Smash Stack or will this one suffice?

Any Wii, no matter what, can be modded at this point.
Also, what could have gone wrong with the process the guy above me used? Maybe he needed to wait the 24 hours first?

Also, should I use IOS236 or a newer one?

I used ModMii to help me out with this process. I asked some questions in the ModMii thread, but if anybody knows the answers to any of these questions, any help would be appreciated in here too. Spoiler contains questions I asked.

I am going to be modding a brand new 4.3 Wii very soon. I will be using Smash Stack to install bootmii as IOS. I have some questions about things written on the guide that ModMii wrote up for me.

-The guide reads "Don’t ever accept a new Nintendo update without first googling to see if it’s safe. The last update (to 4.3) was released in late June 2010 and is NOT safe to accept." But that is the firmware the Wii came with. (Or will come with, since I don't have it yet.) What do I do? Should I worry?

-It reads "If using a Forwarder Channel, just save the boot.elf/dol from the app you want to load (ie. SD:\apps\hackmii_installer\boot.elf or SD:\apps\MMM\boot.dol) to the location used by your SPECIFIC Forwarder Channel (ie. SD:\apps\usbloader\boot.dol). Then start the channel and the Hackmii Installer will load allowing you to reinstall the HBC. Note, if your forwarder channel only loads dol's and not elf's, launch MMM's boot.dol, then use its "App Manager" to load the Hackmii Installer." What is a forwarder channel and how do I know if I'm using one or not?

-I noticed the part about the possibility of needing to reinstall the HBC if certain conditions are met. The step to doing so is listed after other steps about installing a bunch of other things. If I need to reinstall it, shouldn't I do that BEFORE I proceed to use it for a bunch of things in the guide?

-What are WADs for? I have a rather long list of them since I selected all of the extra features options. And these feature options look like things that should come with the Wii already. (Ex "Shopping" or "News".) Why do I need to install them again?

-When it talks about Wii Backup Manager, it mentions this step: "To copy ORIGINAL Wii Disc's, insert the disc into your Wii and... - Launch Configurable USB-Loader, and hit the plus sign '+'." Do I do that from my computer with the USB Hard Drive, or do I do that from my Wii?

-Same question for this step: To Configure/Customize your USB-Loader, use the Configurator for Configurable USB-Loader found here: *snip*(file address on computer)". Do I run the Configurator from my computer, or from the Wii?

-If I want to completely undo everything and return my Wii to factory settings, how would I go about that?

-If my Wii bricks, how do I use the NAND to fix it?

Thank you, goodnight.

P.S.: Also, before using ModMii to help me out, this is the process I came up with. Can someone describe the differences between the way ModMii taught me to do things and the way I worked on myself? I want to make sure I'm not missing anything.

My advice when buying used Wiis is to check the serial number. The lower the number the better, because you're more likely to have DVD functionality and a vulnerable boot1 for Bootmii brick protection. Firmware doesn't matter but you could ask them to turn on the Wii just to make sure it works and sneak a peak at the options menu in the process.
